@The_Eagle
I was just thinking about that day. There's nothing quite like almost being smited from the earth.

Re: Rattlers in the Supes

"How active are the rattle snakes so far in the superstitions? I was hoping to take my kids (younguns) backpacking next weekend, but the drop in temperature has me wanting to stay away from the Rim. Typically come Mid-March I avoid the supes, as an abundance of caution." There are plenty of rattlesn...

Re: I LOVE MY REI DIVIDEND!

I don't know whether to be elated or horrified at the size of my dividend. Backpacking pack, camp stove, yet another pair of shoes or just save it for when I really need something. Just kidding on the last one! It's already burning a hole in my pocket.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

We had a forecast of probable rain here in the Bay Area for next weekend, but that's no longer the case. I hope the RRR (Ridiculously Resilient Ridge...of high pressure) doesn't return for an extended return engagement.

Re: Proposed NPS entrance fee increase during peak seasons

There is also talk about restricting access to Yosemite on summer holiday weekends to visitors with reservations to stay in the park. The gateway communities are predictably hopping mad about this, but Yosemite, particularly the valley, is a mess on summer holiday weekends. This idea has the potenti...

Re: Proposed NPS entrance fee increase during peak seasons

I camped for 9 days at Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite around Labor Day this year, and it wasn't full of poor people. The vast majority of campers had a combination of recent model SUV, REI addiction (as guilty as yours truly), a coating of Burning Man dust on their vehicles, were doing a roadie across...

Re: God help us.....

I'm sure Starbucks' lawyers had the foresight to trademark every possible phrase that could be associated with their business unlike the National Park Service. I'm pretty sore at Delaware North for their trademark nonsense that came out when they lost their concessions at Yosemite. Of course they se...

Re: newbies going on first desert hike

RedRox44's post brings to mind another old axiom that I still remember:
"Better in you than on you." Water is much more effective when it's consumed than when it's dumped on one's head. At least that's my two cents.

@Sredfield That's the best place on earth. I don't know what your lodging plans are, but you'll want to get on it now if you're planning on reserving a campsite. Since you're going to be there for a week (jealous!) you may also want to check out the Siskiyou Wilderness (sasquatch, Devil's Punchbowl...

Re: Big Sur, Pinnalces, Yosemite trip - Advice wanted!

@JimmyLyding Redwoods but either work, just want to see the big trees really. Thanks Shawn, I think the best place to see redwoods are the Redwood National and State Parks. I just returned from a 5-day trip there, and will have photos up once I get through the 1,174 images I took. I love that place...

Re: Big Sur, Pinnalces, Yosemite trip - Advice wanted!

I just breezed through the Sequoia book, and I didn't see any obvious backpacking opportunities. The vast majority of sequoia groves are accessible by paved roads. The groves that require a hike to reach are only 2-4 miles away. This site is an outstanding resource for sequoia hikes: http://www.redw...

Re: Big Sur, Pinnalces, Yosemite trip - Advice wanted!

Are there groves of Sequoias in the Sierra that are only accessible on a backpacking trip (or long day hike), or are they all close to developed areas of the national parks? :-k I've only been to Sequoia and Kings Canyon from the west side one time, and though I did backpack*, the only big trees we...

Re: Big Sur, Pinnalces, Yosemite trip - Advice wanted!

Are you referring to sequoias or redwoods? There are no redwoods in Yosemite or anywhere else in the Sierra Nevada--only in the coast ranges. Sequoias are the one in the Sierra. I am extremely well-versed on the geographical distribution of both species. I asked the question because Big Sur has red...

That strayed quite a bit off path from weather, but I pretty much agree with you. The fish indeed get screwed in the grand scheme of things here, but I never seem to have a problem finding fresh kiwis at my local neighborhood supermarket. The point about the delta backflowing up the Sacramento is a ...

Tuolumne Meadows campground in Yosemite NP isn't scheduled to open until August 1st. The California snow pack is huge this year. I'm expecting an epic year for mosquitoes.

Re: Ticks in Arizona

I never thought about ticks when I lived in Arizona with the exception of finding a few on the family dogs growing up in north Phoenix. However, they are a huge problem here in California. Ticks are likely to be a huge problem as California transitions from a ridiculously wet winter to spring. I've ...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

We've certainly had a wet January with more allegedly on the way. We're at roughly 8.75" for the last week, 12.75" for the last 30 days and 23" since the July 1st start of the rainfall year. That's pretty good so far, but I'd like to see a lot more snow. The rain here is different than what I was us...
