Re: Atmosphere Comparison

It looks like the high pressure ridge that's been keeping Northern California dry for the last 3+ weeks has broken down so we are expecting some nice precipitation over the next week, and I hope that helps get some more precip to Arizona. It was depressingly dry when I was in Phoenix over the holida...

Re: Recent Rains

@Jim_H It doesn't look like Arizona has much snow cover, but I don't know how today's view is compared to 'normal' for this time of year. I also don't know how current the map is for all areas though the information button indicates it's pretty current. California is looking good, but we'll know mo...

Re: Reintroduction of Wolves in Yellowstone

Wolves usually run their quarry to exhaustion before moving in for the kill. This works well with elk because they typically run away from wolves while the much larger bison surrounds its young and stands and fights.

Curiosity got me and the search led me here. Interesting....https://www.the-journal.com/articles/th ... zzly-bear/ The Wiseman grizzly story is fascinating. For the record I believe Ed Wiseman's account of the attack. I am more fascinated by the idea that vanished species have persisted in a given ...

Re: Bears In The News

How do you feel about reintroduction of brown bears? The idea of reintroducing grizzly bears has been in the news out here the last few years. Some people look at the huge federal wilderness areas in the southern Sierra Nevada and think the area would work for grizzly reintroduction, but there are ...

It's not as simple as La Niña means a dry winter while El Niño brings a wet winter. One of the big reasons California and the Southwest received a lot of precipitation last winter and spring was because the very strong La Niña that had kept us dry for 2 years weakened rapidly. It was still La Niña, ...

Re: Foot gear survey - What are your favorite's?

I'm happy to report that my Zamberlan Latemar boots are very broken in and stand a decent chance at being my forever boots. I'm planning on getting them resoled at Dave Page because they have the same sole Zamberlan uses. These boots would be great for Arizona hikers who go off-trail often because t...

Need more goats in the forest. And you can eat them too, milk them; whatever. I've had barbecued goat and it was darn good. And the bears/wolves could have a snack or two rather than eat cattle and make the ranchers angry. Have to reimburse the goat herders for their losses and as long as the gover...

I read somewhere where some scientists blame Neanderthal remnant genetics on why European ancestry is having such a hard time with Covid vs African origin. What Racism is that!! I've read that the biggest determinants for a country's overall infection rate are the mobility of its society (both dome...

Oh, that's why it now has been called Climate Change?
2011-2020 was globally the warmest decade on record. A few outliers don't change that fact despite how they seem to superficially confirm a political narrative.

I watch a lot of footy (Australian Rules Football for you flatlanders), and every broadcast has a Toyota Hilux logo electronically imposed over mid-pitch. If it's good enough for a pack of boozed-up and gambleholic Aussies then it's good enough for me! Those people treat gear worse than Russians, an...

I've fallen in love with Zamberlan boots. I've gone from a Trail Lite EVO GTX to a Duke GTX to a pair of Latemar NW all-leather bad boys without Gore-Tex or anything like that. I couldn't be happier, and I wish I'd switched a long time ago. The Latemars have an all-leather monowrap and calf-leather ...

@friendofThundergod
That's awesome. I've dreamed of seeing, or at least hearing, a wild wolf. There are now wild wolves in far northern California so perhaps I'll get lucky one day.

A lot of us here in California have been saying that same thing recently. I'm glad I got to see the Freeman Grove of giant sequoia and Big Basin.

As my current state's former governator used to say, "velcome to caulifornee-uh."
I suggest picking up a packing tape dispenser (tape gun) and a case of packing tape to seal up one's domicile during particularly bad periods of smoke. It's awesome, but here we go.

I really don't think that I'd welcome them showing up in my town. I have insurance and can rebuild or move on. I don't think the wildlife has that option... You really wouldn't like them showing up on your property like my aunt and uncle experienced in Southern California. Part of that is the loss ...

I'm using Zamberlan Latemar NWs, and I really like them. This is my third pair from Zamberlan (previously used Evo Lite GTX and Duke GTX), and I'm very happy with what I've experienced so far. The Latemar is a bit unusual by not having Gore-Tex, but that's a big reason why I got them. I'm still brea...
