Re: (Pete's) Backwards Z ramp Four Peaks Mother Lode
If by legend, you mean old, you are correct. Honestly, Joe's GPS'd route is going to be the way better choice. If you want to check out the Z, it's really not that much detour to go up the slant, take a look, and come back down if you don't like. It's been 10 years, but as I recall it as 12 feet or ...

Re: Missing Hiker 10/10/09 - Peralta to Weavers Needle
I think it is important to remind people what to do if they get lost. First thing is STOP MOVING. Take some time, figure out where you are and contemplate your options thoughtfully and carefully. Many, Many people panic and quit thinking and keep moving. In the desert, that is the wrong thing to do.

Re: Four Peaks/ Mother Lode - Trespassing?
I talked to a Sierra club member who mentioned that the mine was not currently operating, and he may have said that it changed hands???? Without going thru the the mine, there are not a lot of really good options if one wants to do a "one way." I've heard nightmares about trying to go off ...

night route finding is what makes it fun........
Aren't you going to start on Brown's? Then you don't have to do anything with the mine at all.
Have fun!

Re: Nalgene BPA-free
A couple old Nalgenes, Sigg aluminum bottle, and a big Camelbak bladder complete my water-toting gear. I carry the exact same as you Rob. Kurt taught me back in the day to always have a backup to a bladder. A couple times I have figured out the hard way why he said that. Turns out he was right I al...

Pfrericks - Its really not cool to make assumptions and generalizations about someone before getting to know them. I am not making generalizations. I dont even care if people smoke or if they legalize it or whatever. I know people that smoke and I am making statements based on my observations. I th...

Gun on trails? Its just stupid. Its real easy folks...If you encounter a mountain lion - Don't run! Stop, stand tall, raise your arms and stare the cat down! Don't turn you back on him either. If you encounter a Bear (which is highly unlikely since they're extremely shy) drop your pack and remove a...

Matt, I actually wonder whether more water might make the trip a bit easier. I bet the higher water levels are gonna m...

I just got my info from the garmin website
the product comparison page lists all the outdoor series handhelds as having barometric altimeters
so who knows, but, I know some people were having confusion and questions
maybe that helps, maybe that adds to it
heck, I dunno

your answer
go to http://www.garmin.com
go to "FAQ" in the left hand column
type in altimeter
I know suprised me too.
They are only waterproof to a certain standart
Watches are similar
My suunto is waterproof to 50 meters, yet works on pressure sensors as well.

Garmin GPS Altitude/elevation accuracy(altimeter)
ON a hike recently-(I am certain that some of you are aware of this) someone wondered why their GPS didnt exactly match the map/benchmark readings, thinking that their Garmin should have been pretty accurate. I found out recently that the Garmin uses barometric pressure not GPS triangulation measure...
