Were you also at a higher elevation? Both cold and elevation can cause bubbles in liquid filled compasses. I have had a Silva Ranger for 30 years. Bubbles have come and gone. In response to scottmackey's reply: Butter will hold up fine for a week or more. However, a small squeeze bottle of olive oil will work just as well. This may not be essential for flavor, but the fat is good fuel for hiking.
