Re: Campsites Near Calloway Trail

After chatting with ALMAL I realized I had the wrong trail. It was the Point Trail that my friend hiked and wanted to take the kids to. Sounds like it's a good road in there and numerous camp sites. So that's the plan. Thanks, as usual, for all the comments! None of the suggested options here are in...

Re: Campsites Near Calloway Trail

Any thoughts on Kinder Crossing as an alternative? Seems like that is the de facto beginners backpacking trail, so I'm wondering if it has more camping options...

Re: Campsites Near Calloway Trail

Thank you both! It sounds like it's pretty sparse, but I'll PM Almal.

Campsites Near Calloway Trail

Looking to take my kids backpacking to West Clear Creek down the Calloway Trail. Are there various campsite options down there (like within a mile of the trail terminus)? There will be 2 adults and 5 kids. Just want to avoid getting down there and finding out there are one 1 or 2 spots and they're t...

Battleship Mountain

This has been on my wishlist for a while now and I thought it would be fun to end the year with a bang. I will be there with 2 others (Chapman and his wife). Figure we can meet/start from First Water TH at 7am and just enjoy the day. We will likely be in a green 4Runner with a HAZ sticker on the rea...

Re: Water in Sycamore Canyon now?

Anyone know if there is water in Sycamore Canyon now? A group of us would like to backpack in there next weekend, but I have only seen recent spring flow reports for Babe's Hole and Kelsey Springs. Would like to find something a little further from a trailhead.

Re: Chiricahua Car Camping

I still went way out in the woods to do my business, did not use the restroom at all. I hear that! We do an annual Big Lake July 4th trip with my wife's family. They are big developed "campground" people, and I compromise for that one trip. But every morning after the coffee, I throw the shovel and...

Re: Chiricahua Car Camping

Just got back tonight. At the last minute, we realized that the N.F. campgrounds we were considering were almost 2 hrs from the Monument, so we ended-up staying in Bonita Canyon. The plus side was the proximity to the park, and it was pretty nice as far as developed campgrounds go. But I may have fi...

Re: Chiricahua Car Camping

Thanks for the info. Just found out that Bonita Canyon doesn't allow any fires, so that's not happening. Between hunting season and my wife wanting a little more comfort (long trip), we'll probably have to opt out of dispersed camping. Have you ever been to the Bathtub or Rucker Forest campgrounds? ...

Chiricahua Car Camping

Planning to take the family the Chiricahua National Monument and surrounding area this weekend. We were planning on staying right there in the Bonita Canyon Campground. Any opinions on whether this is better than some of the National Forest campgrounds nearby?

Re: November Backpack with Water?

In looking at the tracklog on my GPS unit, the trail dropped about 1,700 feet over the last 2.5 miles. But a good chunk of that descent is within two half-mile stretches. Throw in some loose rocks and the weariness of being 4 miles in, and it's a recipe for pain. Have you considered West Clear Creek...

Re: November Backpack with Water?

I am looking for a moderate backpack trip for Nov 21st weekend. I may just be out of shape, but I would rate Hellsgate 37 as strenuous. The first 4 miles aren't too bad, but the last 2.5 are brutal. I'd have to check my gps to get the actual elevation change. I can say that my knees were killing me...

Re: November Backpack with Water?

dont discount the trip just because the pools are funky.. the water is clear "enough" and the trip was actually one of my favorites of the entire year. Powers Garden/Galiuro mountains is one of the FEW trips that gets my 5-star rating. I wouldn't have had a problem with it (I've filtered some prett...

Re: November Backpack with Water?

I obviously haven't checked this in a while. How did the water situation turn out in Powers Garden? At this point, we're planning to do hell's gate to tonto. But we may change that if Power's Garden got rain.

Re: Montero Sport?

Dealers are the devil.

I'm all for doing the basic stuff (anything with brakes; starters; generally belts). But I also seem to get myself in trouble a lot. Plus it's not as fun when there's house repairs and family stuff to juggle, not to mention just trying to get to the trails.

Re: Montero Sport?

I've heard also that Mitsubishi's tend to cost more to repair. I googled various parts, though (alternator, starter, axles, brake pads, etc), and they seemed to be about the same or less than for a 4Runner. Is this just a conspiracy?

I don't follow. Are you saying the XLS is locked-up? Or just that it has rear axle that's as durable as a Dana 44?
