Re: Syria
This thing might blow up into something much bigger than the U.S is prepared to fight, igniting the entire Middle East into open war. Syria is not a patsy nation, nor are they without powerful allies. It will not end like our adventure in Libya, where the U.S regime changed Gaddafi with ease, leavin...

Re: National Park Sequester Cuts
These are interesting times to be living. Austerity measures and government spending cuts are inevitable; the age of deficit spending is nearing its end game. Parks and recreation will definitely be among the first to be slashed, and entitlement programs will be the last. It is becoming a nation of ...

Re: The Borderlands
I always tell people to find their own Truth instead of relying on the mainstream media or government sources. It is what you see on the street, what you see at the workplace, what you experience on a daily basis that is your own personal Truth, and very often the Truth is much different from the of...

Re: Sufferthon...
A true Arizona sufferthon must happen between the months of June-September. The Heat will take you to levels of pain never thought possible, like in those Hell Raiser movies, where Pinhead and company do their thing. Manzanita bushwhacking can be a nightmare at times, perhaps incorporate a couple of...

Re: Has Anyone Poked Around The Estrellas/PIR?
Been dating someone who lives 5 minutes from PIR and wondering if anyone has done much poking around behind the race track? Women are scarce in that side of town, so you must have lucked out. I remember how the local bar, The Long Branch Saloon, used to have about a 50:1 ratio between men and women...

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)
There is a good place to camp at point 33. 98624 N 111.50168 W. It has a flowing spring in there and some oak trees that survived the burn...plenty of firewood, nice flat area off to the right. The Forest Service camping restriction follows the Mazatzal Wilderness boundary east of Sheep Mountain, so...

Re: Tonto Closure
The bears that were attacking people have been shot, so I am curious why they need to close the Hells Gate area until September. Will the bears be less aggressive when September rolls around? There are black bears all over the state; like humans, there will always be some bad apples in the lot. The ...

The 4X road down Deadman Mesa is still open as of last Tuesday. Ended up riding my mountain bike down the 8 miles, then hike-a-biked back up the rocky road. I had a trail cam set up down there that worked for 11 months; tons of pics of elk, deer, coyotes, and even a healthy herd of bighorn sheep...h...

Re: Sunflower Fire
There are a couple of springs on the back side of Saddle Mountain, along with some awesome douglas fir trees just north of the Sunflower mine that are/soon-to-be destroyed. I bushwhacked that whole area last summer on an unemployment sabbatical. It was wild country back in there. Sad to see it go. T...

I have a 30 mile loop planned in the Maricopa's for this weekend; I will let you know if I see anything of interest. It will be a bummer to find a bunch of trash out there so far north of the border, time will tell.

Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)
That area gets a good number of deer, elk, and bear hunters each year. They should have their GPS routes incorporated into the official search map. Also, a financial reward for the discovery of GPS Joe would inspire more folks to join the hunt. Some of the best bushwhackers in the state are of the w...

Interesting site, though they did not list Bursera fagoroides in the Caba Cabeza Refuge. Maybe I will send them a couple of pics.

The highest latitude population is somewhere in the Harquahala Mountains. I did a couple of recon trips in there, but did not find anything in either Browns or Sunset Canyon. Guessing they are on the S. face of Socorro Peak. Found a different type of elephant tree last weekend in the Growler Range, ...

Re: Three Bar Animal Enclosure
I will be passing through the 3 Bar this weekend, coming in from Apache Lake. The Three Bar Wildlife Refuge is quite big: it follows the county line on the west end from Four Peaks south to Apache Lake; the eastern boundary from Roosevelt Lake. Three Bar is in Unit 22 and open for hunting, except fo...

@chumley That would be a Palo Verde Beetle and I hate them. They usually don't fly until you are right next to them and I hate them. I've heard that they are underground in the Palo Verde roots for 7 years before they emerge, but I don't think that's entirely true. They do seem to be more present i...

Re: Phoenix Area Preserve Hours
The Estrella Mountain trail head, near Phoenix International Raceway, is open from sunup to sundown; and yes, they will lock in your vehicle at the gate if you stay too long. It is my neck of the woods, so I do a lot of mountain biking in there. Park your truck next to the old 115 Ave bridge, where ...

Any chance they commented on the flow. I would like to do this, maybe this weekend, but I can't see this off route hike being worth while if shooting for an invisible needle in a proverbial haystack. Find the pipe and just follow it up the hill. I am sure you will make it, use map and compass if ne...

I've been think if I go up Humphrey again this summer, I might try to hike over to this spring and then to the Peak. I'll take pics if I do it. I'll need a good break period in the monsoon, so it will be a while as we are in a very moist and active pattern. My dad made it up to the spring with me o...

Hadn't heard about the techno party but knowing the previous manager at the preserve, such would not surprise me. They trucked in huge speakers and played the music all night; with the bass traveling a great distance...thump thump thump. The sound came from the grove of aspen trees in the center of...

Re: Philomena Spring in the S.F. Peaks
That is hunting unit 7E. I went up to Philomena Spring all the way down from my friend's cabin behind Fern Mountain. If I remember correctly, the spring was dry during the first two weeks of September. It has some galvanized pipe and wooden water troughs strewn about that brought water to stock tank...
