Re: Arizona Trivia (added to Home Page)
Arizona Trivia : A small peak in Maricopa County at 742 feet is called Squaw perks Summit. Janet Napolitano could care less unless it brings her publicity. About ten miles away is Squaw Tit. :sl: ..so true! Actually, Squaw Peak was never an original name of what is now Piestewa. Its first anglicize...

Re: Ideas needed for glamping trip
For some first time campers, they do not seem comfortable making like a bear in the woods on their first overnight trip. In these cases it is advantageous to drive to various trailheads in the area and locate one with a pit toilet maintained by the forest service (or in some cases by the state high...

You could always trade in the wife. :--: Shut up Elizabeth! Who asked you? :D First wife actually was a backpacker. Current wife is definitely a keeper and clearly a tremendous upgrade. I'll take my sweetheart city slicker over the evil backpacker any day! Everyone's comments are great and ap...

Just for reference: the very fragile ecosystemed Denali National Park does not have any maintained trails and also doesn't really need them. Denali is not thickly forested. Presumably, widely spreading human door traffic is healthier for the environment there than the use of foot trails. Crowds are ...

Thank you all for the leads. I've been brainstorming for a while but hadn't gotten anywhere. @neilends What timeframe are you looking at going? Open question also but I'm thinking October-November. I still need time to accumulate equipment. All I've owned has been for solo backpacking trips I used t...

Ideas needed for glamping trip
Yes, glamping. I'm a lifelong, second-generation hiker and outdoors-lover. But I married a girly girl who likes her spa days. When I first asked her if she'd ever been camping, she basically gave me a look of horror. But in fairness to the wifey, she's now agreed to trust in me to drive my Jeep Wran...

Re: National Trail's western 'Unofficial' Trailhead
I did the hike today. There's construction at the major lot that I assume used to be the "trailhead." I don't suggest parking there anymore. There were 2-3 other hikers today and they each seemed like regular hikers of Alta. They parked their cars along the shoulders of the road.

South Mountain experts: I'm trying to figure out how to access the Alta Trail from its western end, and am confused by the maps, Google results, and data on HAZ. This old 2009 thread is the closest I could find to discussing it. Assuming San Juan Road is closed for traffic this Sunday, is it possibl...

The new Vig in North Scottsdale is heavily geared toward hikers and mountain bikers. It's a 2 minute drive from the Gateway Loop trailhead of the McDowell-Sonoran Preserve. There's direct views of the McDowell Mountains from the patio. In part because of Scottsdale's snooty visual signage rules the ...

Re: Sierra hiker clothes blasted off by lightning strike
Yikes. I have a friend who got struck by lightning while hiking in Utah, when he was in his early 20s. No one knows if he was literally struck or whether it hit the ground close to him. Either way, he gets to say that he was struck. He woke up in the dead of night since he'd passed out, alone. He's ...

Re: Shenanigans at Burro Creek
I assume he's a first-time offender and probably has a bunch of emotional and/or mental issues. I'd expect a guilty plea and some minimal amount of jail time subject to compliance with some strict probation conditions. He sounds like a domestic violence threat to the rest of his family, not to menti...

What kind of moron owns land (emphasis on land) passionately enough to shoot at "trespassers," without understanding that waterways are not private property?

I took a 360 of the Arizona Eclipse!
Translation: I took a 360 of a bunch of clouds moving over Arizona!

Joe, I've briefly wished you well before but I hadn't learned the full details of your accident until just now. As you can see I'm an 8 year member of HAZ. Almost a decade. I was a 30something when I started. When I'm healthy and fit, it's because I've been active on HAZ. When I'm being lazy and my ...

Re: 360 cameras
Is this a new technology? Do you need a special camera for it? Doesn't the camera just use software to piece the photo together? Software can be run on any device. 360 cameras for consumers were not really a thing until 2017. Pros have been using these cameras that range up to $8000 and beyond for ...

@CannondaleKid "The biggest draw-back for me is how to display the results in the photosets on my website. I 'tell the story of my hike' through the order of the photos, and having to exit the photoset a number of times to view each 360-photo (on a separate page? or in a separate app?) returni...

Cannondale: All good points. But some interesting issues here. One issue: different levels of expertise. The VIRB is $800. Yikes. No thanks. My Samsung cost me $130. It's not professional-grade imagery but see my linked image above: it's good enough for this amateur hobbyist. It won't satisfy someon...

Re: 360 cameras
@joebartels I think you can count on more 360 fanatics like me. 2017 is the year, because Ricoh and Samsung have produced consumer-priced 360 cameras. Apple will get involved sooner or later. So will a flood of HAZers. That's my official prediction! For now I will have to stick with Kuula because t...
