Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Susan, (my wife) and I set up a couple humongous tents, camp tables, stoves, etc at the camp site Tuesday AM. Afterward, while checking to make sure we had brought everything, I discovered that I'd forgotten my extra packs for the kids! Maureen, (Daughter) was going to come out and spend the night w...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Our base camp will be a couple miles SW of the Peralta TH. Wednesday AM, the ladies will shuttle us around to the 1st Water TH. Then we'll follow the route of a fellow Geriatric, 'oh oh 7', down the Dutchman's Trail, (104) to the Peralta Trail, (102). We'll camp at Aylor's Wednesday night. That'll g...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Well, our guests won't have "Omaha" weather next week out here, but it won't be super warm either. Oh well. I'm thinking about starting out on 1st Water and walking straight East, down Peralta Trail. That way the ladies, who aren't bp'ing won't have to drive around to the 1st water TH a se...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Thanks, folks.
I'll stick with a site off the Peralta Road.

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Back again. Hopefully people won't think this subject's dead. Questions keep popping up. My one remaining problem is the site for a base camp, outside the wilderness area. The Peralta area is always an option, but I talked to a Tonto NF Rep in the Mesa office this morning (again) and he suggested we...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Love it!! Wonder if they keep their receipts. I'm trying to get hold of a NF rep who can tell me if there's tent camping available on the 1st Water side. I'd rather have a base camp for the mothers and aunts of the kids to be a little cleaner, fewer empty beer cans, crushed glass, shotgun shells, et...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Well, it looks like the Keystone Kops are running this show. The youngsters want to come to see the Superstitions, so that's what we're going to do. Now I gotta re-print all those maps I dumped today, and set my brain back to the East Valley. Actually, I'm happy. Beats the h**l out of Quartzsite and...

Re: Kingman area/ Hualapai Peak?

If you're still open to the Kingman area, contact our local BLM office at 718-3700. They can tell you of a number of hikes available that haven't been mentioned. The Hualapai hike is a good day jaunt. Another is the Mt Nutt Wilderness area. Check with BLM, though. They've got a lot of information.

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

djui5 The stories I got about the brothers is what came out of books I'm sure you've already read. Fascinating tales. And perfect for telling, around a campfire a little way North of Weaver's Needle, on a night when the coyotes are harmonizing, and there's a new moon. Not this time around, though, u...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

djui5, I'd like to, but they're out of a few books I've read about the Superstitions, and I'm sure y'all have read the same ones. The fun is in the telling, around a campfire at night, maybe a quarter mile NNE of Weaver's Needle, when the coyotes are harmonizing and there's a new moon. Instead, it l...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Went down and walked a part of the Dutchman's Trail, past Parker Pass. My wife conked out, so we turned around. I know it's a long weekend, but the trail was packed! We drove around to the Peralta side, and looked for decent camping spots. There were some. Covered with shotgun shells, broken glass a...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

I'll be going down to the Valley this weekend, plan to walk part of the trail tomorrow. Looking forward. It's been 24 years since I last was on it Back then, there were a bunch of squatters outside the Trailhead living in travel trailers and old motor homes. I understand that area's been cleaned out...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Great, djui5! Thanks. I want to study this more. I bp'ed into Parker Pass in '83 for a few days. During the month of August. ( I think it's called masochism). Anyhow, as I remember, it wasn't a hard hike. I'll get ink for my trusty printer tomorrow, and copy the map, and, like I said, study your com...

Re: Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

My TOPO calls it the "Needle Cutoff Trail", Hoffmaster. Probably known by another name by those who hike that area. It runs E and W, between Peralta Trail and Needle Trail, (which I guess is really "Terrapin" Trail), just South of Black Top Mesa. I'll check out the sites you list...

Re: Superstitions

You bring up a good point, regarding gear, Sup. guy. Good reason not to backpack. I have the gear, but the wrong size pack is a pain. I'm done with the Eastern part, Crocodile. Walked the AzT segment last Fall, from Roger's Trough to the Lake. Beautiful country. You mentioned the Bluff Springs Loop,...

Superstitions "Never wore a pack"

Got some neices and nephews coming out on Spring Break from Omaha. They want to go into the Superstitions. They're city folk, never wore a pack. I was thinking about going up Peralta Trail, cutting East on the cutoff trail, then coming back down the Needle and Dutchmans Trail in two days. I've taken...
