Re: Museum Fire

If that's the same log pile I saw a couple weeks ago (I was riding down Schultz, then back up via various trails on the NW side... sorry, not 100% sure which trail I was on when I got the pics) but...

Re: iPhone or Samsung?

I'm an Android junkie. Had the iPhone 5c briefly for work (it was halfway decent for the limited task of phone calls and email) but I despise Apple with a passion for a lotta reasons I won't go into here. Some company-related, most tech-related. That disclaimer aside, I've had the Galaxy S3, S4 (wor...

Re: Snake Gaiters -worth it?

I can't even guess how many miles I've hiked in AZ (and compared to a large population here, I'm still a complete newbie.) I've seen more than a few rattlers over the years (my facebook feed is filled with rattlesnake photos from just the last year of riding), and while some encounters have been kin...

Re: I LOVE MY REI DIVIDEND!

Already submitted for payout on my dividend. My last dividend (well, except for purchases I made this year up until their recent strain of public idiocy.)

Probably gonna spend it on Camelbak stuff, or maybe some ammo =)

Re: How Much Food For R2R2R?

Hard part for me was forcing myself to eat enough. By the time I was halfway up NK, my body just wasn't interested in trying to consume food, despite a definite need for energy replenishment. But yeah, time it right to be at Phantom when they're open and there's plenty of food to get the job done. H...

Camping near greasy spoon in sedona

I was hoping to head north for a bit this weekend and get some time in on the mountain bike, as well as car camp. Anyone aware of decent car camping options around the greasy spoon area? I wanna hit up the trail system (attached screenshot) so proximity to those trails is strongly desired. 4wd not a...

Re: 400 GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card

I've had microSD card failures before (SanDisk even) and saw my first ever desktop SSD failure about two weeks ago. (I work in IT, so I see a LOT of hardware, so that one failure is beyond rare in my experience.) I still stick primarily to Sandisk and Samsung memory though, as they've been reliable ...

Re: Lightweight backpacking tripod solution

Massive credit for ingenuity. :app: I've thought about some of the lighter tripod options over the years, but always end up 'upgrading' to something bigger/heavier instead. Just can't bring myself to put L glass on anything less, even if my backpack causes pain. Still using an old Manfrotto 055MF3 (...

Re: Camelback Christmas Tree

Saw a blip about this on the news this morning. Plenty of time to plan a glorious 'civil disobedience' action between now and xmas. Obviously, it'll be bringing a tree to the top and the defense of said tree thereafter.

Bring it, you jackwagon politicians =)

Re: Toyota Motor Mount, Frame Failure Warning

My first hint was noises when turning in one direction. Next major hint was the plastic engine cover contacting the fan shroud (and subsequently the fan contacting the fan shroud.) Ahh the joys. Little bit of wrenching, welding, and DMZ part additions and no issues since though. Toyota offered to pa...

Re: teeter hang up

Wait, I coulda used HSA money on that? dammit! Edit: Lol @ "gee whiz" filter... I rarely use mine anymore, but that's because the last time I did a spring cleaning of my place, I folded it up to lean against a wall so I could clean under it, and have just been too lazy to put it back. Been meaning t...

Re: Boots for hot weather hikes

Not terribly enthused by these Oboz Sawtooths either unfortunately. Had them for 3 weeks. 3 squaw peaks, 5 echo canyons, and 2 camelback traverses, and theyre already wearing down pretty rapidly. The tread also seems to feel less grippy than im used to from the merrells. Id say the compound is harde...

Saw the same trash pile a few weeks ago. Been there for a while according to a friend. =(

And all my stuff sacks from that trip are accounted for =)

Re: Boots for hot weather hikes

A little bit of a thread resurrection... Recently got a bug up my ass to really put the miles on and managed to wreck yet another pair of Merrell's. I was all set to pick up another pair but ever since the holidays, REI has had virtually no inventory (always pointing to the clearance/garage sale rou...

Re: Missing hikers in Supes: Jonathon Trethewey, Todd Adair and Jason Nichols

sounds like they were trying to do the ridgeline starting from Peralta? There are some photos from the police response showing trailhead bits, but I can't tell if it's the Peralta TH, or the Carney TH. I haven't been to Peralta in ages, but the pics sure do look like the TH I started at to do Carne...

Re: Missing hikers in Supes: Jonathon Trethewey, Todd Adair and Jason Nichols

A common connection on Facebook suggests the plan was indeed a Ridgeline. "One of them is my friend's brother. They started up around 9 AM. Around 4 PM one of them put a call in to let family know they were lost. They were supposed to be on the Ridgeline Trail. From one of the videos his friend post...

Re: Missing hikers in Supes: Jonathon Trethewey, Todd Adair and Jason Nichols

Not a great time for someone to go missing out there. I was up on 5057 on New Years Day when the storms were rolling through, and I was out near Reavis Ranch this whole weekend. Based on the video of those guys, they are NOT prepared for the conditions out there if caught in any meaningful weather.

Re: Camelback Christmas Tree

If only Phoenix Parks and Rec were as gung ho about following the laws themselves. How many years did it take for them to even START removing their illegal signage prohibiting firearms? Then there's the inconsistency of park hours. Squaw Peak... go ahead and hike after dark, they don't care (assumin...

Just another reason I will never go there. I'm hardly a hippie PETA type, but animal abuse is easily one of the top three ways to evoke my otherwise nonexistent violent side.

Re: 3 day, 2 night, looking for ideas

Aravaipa has been on my want list for ages. So much so that i checked a few times since this weekend was carved out for permits, but as expected, no luck =( Gotta get to a computer to consult the maps for some more likely candidates again. A lot of what i was looking at so far would be a stretch, at...
