Re: Shooting mountain lions & bears
Remember folks: Here's the best thing to do if you're hiking with a group of friends and you see a lion. (1) Stop :stop: (2) Pull out your handgun : rambo : (3) Aim at a friend's knee :x (4) Pull the trigger :gun: (5) Do a little dance  (6) Walk away laughing  (You won't even have to bot...

...I never heard of a cat tearing apart a tent to get in. I have; although, you may be right that a tent might reduce the likelihood of attack since a tent doesn't "look" like prey, even if it smells like prey (i.e. you). I have a friend whose dad was attacked while he was in a tent. As i...

East-Central New Mexico
Does anybody know anything about hiking (or other recreation) in east-central New Mexico? My brother is in the Air Force, and just got word that he (and the wife and babies) will be spending the next four years at the USAF base near Clovis, NM. I'm wondering what there is to do for outdoorsy recreat...

I gotta say: I was frustrated the first time that the HAZ censor replaced a mild-to-moderate curse word with "pumpkin" in one of my posts, but it's pretty damn funny when it does it to other people.hippiepunkpirate wrote:'The pumpkin does that mean!?

banning seems like failure to manage Banning, being regulation, is management. I think Joe might be suggesting something like this: Banning alcohol didn't work. Banning pot didn't work. Banning those things in college dorms certainly doesn't work. Banning immigration w/o proper documents didn't wor...

(Spoiler: Irish Setter Boots almost lost my business for good, but redeemed themselves when given the chance. Read on for details.) I bought a pair of Irish Setter Tamarack hiking/hunting boots (9" tall, 800g insulated, Goretex, Scent-Lok) a while back, and was pleased with them until a couple ...

More snow coming despite La Nina conditions
Most people seem aware that there is rain/snow in the forecast for much of the state this weekend (Feb 19-21) -- at least the northern and eastern parts -- but I just noticed that the latter half of the 10-day forecast is showing another storm coming through a few days later. Specifically, http://ww...

Not to be a "Debbie-Downer," but I would reinforce chumley's storm concern, and venture to say that ANYWHERE in northern or eastern AZ that is high enough to have trees may well be getting 6-12" of snow this weekend. I just checked the weather for Flagstaff (because I live there), and...

At least the vandal was caught, and hopefully the $10k penalty will be a deterrent to him (and possibly other vandals) doing more damage.

I've found that if I wait until the REI garage sales I can usually find exactly what I want for dirt cheap. This has worked out pretty well for me. Last time I got a $175 pair of Vasque Wasatch GTX for $25 brand new. For some reason, this post just reminded me of the time that I accidentally gave a...

Re: Havasupai Update
If the People of the Blue-Green Waters didn't want to develop their land into a tourist destination, then they wouldn't have. I'm not sure if that's true -- The tribe has been sort of painted into a corner regarding its ability to sustain itself, and tourism is now its only source of income. The tr...

Re: Foot gear survey - What are your favorite's?
A basic rubber boot would seem suitable if constantly standing in water. True, but we often had to hike moderate distances through sketchy terrain to reach the study sites. This would mean doing said hike in rubber boots ( :yuck:) or carrying an extra set of boots into the field with me (also :yuck...

never wore goretex. its a gimmick. I wouldn't say Gore-Tex is a gimmick. I've spent hours standing in 6" of running water (helping a river ecologist with field work) without getting wet socks/feet. I'm personally a believer, although I have had Gore-Tex boots fail if a stitch gives way. Like m...

and men eating 2lbs/day I couldn't eat that much if I tried! If I did, I'd weigh a ton. Have you eaten elk meat? It's darn tasty, and you might surprise yourself. Throw in some cannibalism, and you've got a multiplied benefit -- more food and less competition for it. (Adds a whole new meaning to the phrase "human resources," no?) ...If things were REALLY bad, i.e. so bad that plans like mine would start to fail, then murder and cannibalism become r...
