This obviously won't be my group's only means of navigation, and I think someone else will be bringing a traditional GPS as well as our normal topo maps. I second that. I took that same set with me Tonto Creek and despite keeping them relatively protected in a garbage bag most of the time, they didn't fare so well just sitting on top of my wet pack at camp. They're good for a bag within a bag within a bag... more of a stuff sack than anything.

That's the post I ran into earlier. I'll have to experiment with what I've got and see if I can get similar results. How do you waterproof/float your pack?

I only saw incidential mention of this in some triplogs and couldn't find an actual topic, so I figured I'd start one up. Last year when I did Tonto Creek, I used garbage bags as a pack liner and water noodles strapped to the outside to help float my gear. I had a 70 lb pack, so "floating"...

I did Tonto Creek last year with the large black plastic bags as a pack liner, secured with hair ties. It worked alright, but I'm glad I brought extra bags, because my gear would stretch and rip the bags, when unpacking and repacking. I've got a trip coming up to West Clear Creek, and decided to go ...
