thanks for the feedback and input everyone! i'm doing a triathlon in tempe the week before, so hopefully between hiking all summer and training for that i'll be in the best shape of my life heading into the canyon!!

I am wanting to do a South Rim to North Rim back to South Rim during the first weekend in October. I wanted to go South Kaibab to North Kaibab and back to the campgrounds around phantom ranch; then camp at the bottom and hike back out the next day. Any advice from veteran grand canyon hikers? good point. i've heard some interesting stories of people who chose to end their lives at the canyon..There's a pretty good chance that "fell" is the wrong word in this case. It's an all-too-familiar pattern.

I hike the McDowell preserves pretty frequently. I usually start from the 128th St access and go up to the peak and back (6.44 miles). do remember what time of year you're going too! while the canyon can be almost 30* hotter at the bottom in summer, it can be the exact opposite in winter and be much colder than anticipated at the bottom. also, you want to be prepared for snow as those trails can become mighty slick if they get icy!...
