Re: What kind of winter do you think we'll have?
A little spring wind in Springerville (or Lakeside) is a relative term...if it blows less than 35 mph for a 24 hr average, it's just a light breeze and doesn't count. ;) I hope for a very snowy winter here in the 4 corners. Last year's ski season wasn't too bad, but now with Taos, Wolf Creek, Tellur...

Re: Maybe I'll move to Utah...
Moving only changes your location, and therefore changes your options. It doesn't change the downside to human nature. I moved from Michigan to Arizona two years ago then to NM about 5 months ago. The only reason I moved was for employment, and I could be equally happy in any of these three states. ...

Re: iHike, iPod, therefore iAm
I can see if you are out jogging a loop, or maybe while relaxing in the tent...on the trail however, no thanks. Personally I think I average less than 1 encounter with a human being during any given hike, and most times they are going the other way or off the trail taking a break. So my sound track ...

Re: Scary NRA Militia types?!!
Every time I get offered a pair, they're standard length (which leave my ankles exposed). So I bought two pair of the modern style (velcro and drawstring closures on the pockets instead of buttons) and one pair of the standard ones with buttons. I bought them for hiking and for riding the quad. Whic...

Re: Scary NRA Militia types?!!
I wear BDU (military camo) pants at times while hiking. They're cheap/rugged and with all the pockets, I can easily do short day hikes with a simple camelbak and still carry a GPS, camera, phone, and some food in the pockets. Plus in other parts of the country, it's very nice to have those drawstrin...

Just remember to address everyone as "kind brother-love-sunshine" and you'll be good. Is that before or after you smack 'em up side the head with a frying pan? I heard there was another rabid bobcat attack this week, this time it was over in Prescott Valley - pretty darn close to Cottonwo...

Re: Rainbow Family fight on Mt. Graham
So there's a ban on arguments, but when someone breaks that rule, the response is assault and property damage. Hmmmm, I guess I'm just not enlightened enough to understand.... I'd heard strange tales of their gathering up in this area about a decade ago. Which were similar in their irony, although n...

Re: Protection from attacks
I generally do carry a knife, but like azpride stated, it's for cutting things. Fending off a rabid animal (which is the only kind of animal attack I seem to hear about lately) with a blade would be nearly impossible - as even if you kill or drive off the critter, you're not likely to escape without...

Re: Snowing like crazy in the White Mtns!
I think this site is far enough out of the way that the teenagers don't bother. I'm sure it's been looted, but the glyphs are in good shape according to a friend who was there last weekend. We had snow this am, kept snowing until at least 10AM west of Snowflake. There was some snow still on the dirt...

Re: Snowing like crazy in the White Mtns!
Thanks Azbackpackr, I'm excited to explore a new area. On the way back from the interview I drove past parts of El Malpais and El Morro, and through some beautiful landscapes. Haven't been up Mt. Taylor yet, but that is one massive solitary peak and I hear there's good biking up there as well. I nee...

Re: Snowing like crazy in the White Mtns!
Thanks for the feedback. I figured given the terrain and all the NF land in the area, that I'd feel right at home. If the economy weren't so screwed up, I'd stick around, but I have a bad feeling about my current place of employment. You must have really gotten nailed in Springerville, we only had m...

The guys who flew in from out of town were a bit shocked to have 50 degree temps at noon, and snow around 3:30PM. Not quite the "Arizona" they had expected I guess...but then, that's why we live (or lived) up here. Azbackpackr, I had hoped to get a chance to do some hiking with you this sp...

Re: Vehicles
TH vehicle is a stock 98 Cherokee sport. The mileage isn't great (19-23 hwy) but considering I got it for next to nothing I can't complain. Only issue was the damn computer shorted out last summer, and I had to get new brakes and tires about a year ago - so I've paid a whooping $2.5k total and gotte...

Lot's of trails, still enough snow melt to make things muddy. I've been holding of on hiking after the last snow storm due to the mud, but it's getting better. Hope to be in the woods this weekend, probably on the Timber Mesa trail or if it's still muddy I'll try Buena Vista as I haven't had a chanc...

Re: Management in Wilderness Areas.
Cost... I fully understand that building and operating a boiler and generator cost money. But we managed to pull it off up here in Snowflake, and now have all the free fuel we need in the form of forest thinnings (and there is still a massive excess of fuel), and we manage to sell 25 megawatts of co...

Re: Management in Wilderness Areas.
I still don't understand why they waste all those forest thinnings by burning them in the open air. You know, you can burn wood (or anything organic) to make power... I agree that fire is part of the natural cycle. That it does serve a natural purpose, to replenish nutrients to the soil and to preve...

I know what you mean about Chitown. Chicago driving is an experience...you don't worry about the speed limit, you just go fast enough to not get run over by the bumper to bumper traffic moving at 80 mph - same as Detroit used to be (when people still lived and worked there). I have accumulated a who...

Re: Scary NRA Militia types?!!
I suppose, seeing as how buying a fully automatic rifle without all the necessary red tape and enormous price tag is about as illegal as you can get in this country, the black market would adjust in the same way it traffics other goods. Probably bring the firearms in from abroad and "redistribu...

Look at Blackhawk's Omega series for a standard thigh rig, it has a snap thumb break, easy to adjust size, and will allow you to leave a weapon light on the rail if you care to do so. Not as nice as the serpa panel style thigh rigs, but probably a lot more comfortable. Or try their Special Ops holst...
