Re: Wilderness Group Size Limit

I am surprised Tonto USFS is ok with this AMC loophole as USFS Superingville and NPS GC do not allow such hiynx. The large scouting events on Mt Baldy and the huge GC R2R group size problems are prime examples. AMC should set a batter example especially in an already congested wilderness area. Rant ...

Re: Advice on hiking to phantom in Feb or Aug?

My suggestion would be Feb as you can always put on an extra layer as here's a sad GC story from SK & 2017 where these kids no longer have a mom. Most GC exposure issues are from heat and not cold. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/08/05/mom-hiking-kids-grand-canyon-believed-have-d...

Re: Mount baldy loop camping spots and water sources

I know deadfall can be a huge problem on Baldy and some bad years there can be 250 trees blocking the West/East Baldy loop. I phoned the USFS Springerville and they had no reports of significant deadfall. How much deadfall are we currently talking about on the West Baldy trail as we have plans for t...

Re: NOBO AZT Spring 2018 ~ Mid-March

Like already suggested I would contact NPS at GC via Backcountry Information Center (grca_bic@nps.gov or 928-638-7875 ) as North Rim is staffed 24x7 even in the winter so you should be able to find at least an water faucet. I would not be surprised to find staff still traveling the closed hwy today ...

Re: Body of missing Grand Canyon hiker found

Tragic as woman was a mother of 5 kids as well as Dallas ER doc who had hiked the GC before? Quotes from NPS appear to indicate body was found on north side of the river? Maybe story will change but that puts her within access to the river and access to a water faucet & emergency phone at boat beach...

Re: West Baldy Trail #94, AZ :: Snow/Ice Condition

Hopefully you don't run into legal trouble with USFS since you posted your Baldy plans for the 2nd week of June. Because Baldy is a Federal Wilderness Area, the USFS does not have any camp areas on the mountain so I would think scouts in general would respect this designation and camp elsewhere. May...

Re: West Baldy Trail #94, AZ :: Snow/Ice Condition

Baldy is a great hike but it appears many don't realize it is a Federal Wilderness Area. A few years back a group of local scouts doing a similar 50 mile march got into serious trouble with the USFS as they camped on Baldy in violation of the group size limit. There are few if any sites designed for...

Saw an interesting site where someone is going for the GC double crossing record of just under 7hrs for approx 42 miles this weekend...

GC Single Crossing NK-SK record is just over 3hrs.

Well its the North Rim... http://www.azdot.gov/CCPartnerships/News/NRel3475.asp Last year ADOT & NPS kept their gates open till Dec 4 even though the Lodge closes on Oct 15. Re: Baldy Loop Backpacking

FYI - Frank Carl Patane, 60, of Tucson, was last seen on Aug. 11, 2011 while hiking the West Baldy trail. Story I recall was he was staying at a lodge in Greer who reported him overdue-a couple reported passing him on the trail and his signature and vehicle were found at the trailhead. Last I heard ...

Re: Baldy Loop Backpacking

Seems like most camp along the LC on the West Baldy where you go 4 miles along it whereas you only see the LC for a short distance along the East Baldy trail. Also, on the subject of Mt Baldy, ADOT just re-opened both hwy 261 & 273 today after using their snow blaster to clear the usual drifts on 273.

Did a North-South crossing on a warm day in late May but left at 4pm and had full-shade without needing even sunglasses.

Called from CedarRidge and had a Harvey Car waiting for me trailside at midnight.

So Jim how much snowshoe traffic do you guess dutchman glade or AC get per week as I suspect we need some traffic to open things up for us flatlanders.

When you were frequenting it were you able to follow your same established snowshoe packed route?
