Re: 2021 Fire Season

the beautiful post fire moonscape of Mt Ord along slate creek at FR27 and the miles of charred guardrails is quite a memory. luckily they didn't moonscape FR626, GPSJOE's powerline route, or the Ord highground above 6k ft. I am often surprised at how nice an area can be even after fire. Some are com...

Re: SPOT or Garmin InReach??

A little off topic but but I just noticed in the fine print for the Garmin InReach GEOS SAR coverage which I think is an optional extra fee that Expeditions, time trials, and/or record attempts--FKT's are NOT covered. I believe SPOT also using GEOS. They define Expeditions as – An organized journey ...

Re: SPOT or Garmin InReach??

retired my spot a couple years ago as for a few extra bucks the extra piece of mind could be a lifesaver.

spot uses the problematic Globalstar satellites vs Iridium for Inreach.

2 minute extreme tracking upgraded plan for inreach works well and 2 way sms is a godsend compared to spot.

tonto certainly doesn't have this problem either.

how many square miles of moonscape were they responsible for creating?

Re: Cocodona 250 Mile Race from Black Canyon to Flagstaff via Mt Elden

I don't know the winner or if he is boastful in his win, but I think 250 miles on foot, and those particular 250 miles, in 3 days speaks for itself. Seems just as impressive as someone who can spend 60 days out in the woods with nothing but a pocket knife. Just two very different races with very di...

Re: 430+ Doing R2R Last Saturday

The common theme is these violators seem to like the attention as that was the case with the group of 75 organized by a Phx guy for many years until NPS showed up at his home. NPS is aware of many R2R event violators and eventually pays them a visit but for some reason it takes often many years and ...

Re: Cocodona 250 Mile Race from Black Canyon to Flagstaff via Mt Elden

Not my cup of tea either but I know we have lots of AZT+Crown King+Prescott+Verde Valley+Sedona+Mt Elden & dog fans which were spotlighted/livestreamed throughout. Several crews had their dogs and families along to re-energize them as crew while there are stopped at major checkpoints along the cours...

Cocodona 250 Mile Race from Black Canyon to Flagstaff via Mt Elden

1st year for this but some incredible drone coverage and camera crew running alongside was completed today in 72hrs for 250+ miles. Livestream of event is on youtube as well as facebook. ( youtube chat & iphone coverage provided at times by actual race participants during their runs ) Cool to see th...

Re: South Rim Trail /Trailhead updates

Wasn't this person a former HAZ member? Went on a few runs with someone who got busted and banned for two years. He had three busses full of family members and friends if I recall. Then printed t-shirts for all 150 of them. different group but same GC ranger's investigation as that character arrang...

Re: South Rim Trail /Trailhead updates

@SpiderLegs appears it has changed as too many people thinking it's cool to bring large groups into the canyon so now you need a permit or risk having NPS show up at your home. The change due to COVID appears to be no groups larger than 10 are being allowed but SUP is still required for 10 or less ...

Re: South Rim Trail /Trailhead updates

https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/trail-closures.htm#CP_JUMP_2383732 Maybe you think it might be due to the zoo all the organized R2R hikers and runners have created which sure looks like permits will be required next. Now it's most any and all groups. I've run into many organized groups doing ...

Re: South Rim Trail /Trailhead updates

Appears lots of old and new GC news hikers might want to know about... The Silver Bridge will be closed to hiker use between 8am and 5pm MST, Mon-Fri, from Apr-12-2021 to May-7-2021. During the closure times hikers will need to cross the Colorado River via the Black Bridge instead. Hikers using the ...

Re: Mt Hopkins -- is the observatory still kicking hikers off the mountain?

Ritas well known to border patrol especially common in madera canyon.

quail creek hiking group would be a good source.

follow the offtrail routes as no need to hike the road to Hopkins unless you need to touch the tower for your FKT

Re: Mount baldy loop camping spots and water sources

the unofficial Mt Baldy season begins on April 15 with ADOT reopening 273 & 261 per ADOT and Big Lake General Store. expect rotten spring snow in parts and 75+ down trees on at least East Baldy from my trek in late November. Hopefully USFS springerville crew will have trails cleared by July 4 which ...

Re: Mapping and surveying GC through history

a little off topic but I wonder what Powell and company would think of people swimming across the Colorado in pursuit of a new R2R2R FKT ALT record time? Latest rage with the ultra crowd as I was asked for GC beta during a recent Mt Ord trek. The Mt Ord ultras struggled with their all day 28 mile do...

Strange Mountain Top Lights

Tonight on drive down the hill from Payson in the burn area there is a strange light atop a mountain near MP210 on 87 South that flashes blue, green, red, and maybe another color continuously?

Suspect this is fire related but very strange as mountain is north of Ballentine TH.

Anyone notice the tons of smoke and pretty good size flame lengths near Sunflower this a.m.

Wonder how many 911 calls they got from drivers as I didn't see any controlled burn signs or any crews?

Re: Bush Fire

BAER report news indicated they were cleaning washes as interactive report below appears to indicate an extreme event possible along that entire 15 mile single lane section of Hwy 87 from the 626 road to Hwy 188. Not too many years ago a Mazzie fire on the opposite side of Slate Creek created a debr...

Re: Bush Fire

A good thing I guess that we have all these fire resources already working nearby fires as they used crews from the Bush fire to stop the Central Fire and just today the Dome Fire. Big wind event forecasted with some areas of AZ forecasted to get 50mph gusts this week. The Dome Fire, 38 acres, start...
