Re: Edible in AZ

In response to azbackpackr: How did you know? That is exactly the first thing they do with the kids at my son's job I mentioned earlier. (Somehow I doubt if anyone has ever brained a rabbit with one, though.) My son also has made a super-nifty set of bow and arrows, with arrowheads he knapped himse...

Re: Hell Canyon Wilderness - Garfias Wash

One quick question . . . with all you hiking pros, will this 8-10 mi hike be what you'd consider a "fast pace" ? or do moderate hikers fit into the mix as well?

Re: Found a great website for flora & fauna identifications

Yessssssss ! ! ! Thank you Al Hikes AZ, I'm excited about this lead Check out Wendy Hodgson's book "Food Plants of the Sonoran Desert" I've browsed bookshelves and found books that just don't 'hit the mark' Even though they include info about plants & edibles, I haven't gotten much fro...

Re: Should GameBoys be allowed in the backcountry?

I've never owned a camera (unless I bought a disposable once or twice) & I've never brought any electronics to the outdoors (usually leave cell phone under driver's seat of car) but, now I own an iphone which includes a camera & I felt it was a Huge Privilege to take pictures on the trail! W...

Re: You guys don't have Holocantha

Wow, Al Hikes AZ, thank you for responding! I am apparently incredibly under informed because I had no idea I should look under Canotia because I've only ever known what to call it based on what I've heard others say. For instance, you said The plant most commonly called Crucifixion thorn is "C...

Re: Found a great website for flora & fauna identifications

I wanted to ask for a bit of clarification. In your previous post, you said: If you make the first attempt at labelling your photo, it will make it easier for the Flora administrators and your photo is more likely to get posted. My question is: were you referring to the Enature site administrators? ...

You guys don't have Holocantha

I wanted to link my picture to the fauna, but I didn't find it or any of it's names listed in this excerpt that I cut and pasted: This intricately branched, spiny shrub or small tree has no leaves -- just thick, rigid, sharp branches, which perform photosynthesis. The Crucifixion Thorn is bluish gra...

Re: TOPO! to TopoUSA GPS Tip

There used to be a free website that would display a topo map for any area you'd want to search for. It was called TopoZone. The pages were slow to load, but it's like looking at a USGS map with features like zoom, etc. I own no topographical maps or programs, but am an avid map reader (ya, how is t...
