Brothers, mechanical engineers, are climbing many of the world’s tall peaks to prove they have been measured incorrectly
In 2020, Eric Gilbertson, a mechanical engineering professor at Seattle University, climbed the 100 highest mountains in Colorado. Or so he thought. In 2021, he found something concerning in data published by the United States Geological Survey about a summit called Crestone Peak. It’s one of Colora...

How Did the C.I.A. Lose a Nuclear Device?
A plutonium-packed generator disappeared on one of the world’s highest peaks. The mission demanded the utmost secrecy. A team of American climbers, handpicked by the C.I.A. for their mountaineering skills — and their willingness to keep their mouths shut — were fighting their way up one of the highe...

Study finds manmade whitewater parks in Colorado may inhibit fish migration
A new study by Colorado Parks and Wildlife researchers suggests man-made whitewater parks that create “play waves” for kayakers and other recreationists are having a negative impact on fish passage.

I am not Bio-mechanically efficient, and struggled with knee, hip and foot pain, until I started using a Birkenstock Sport insert in my hiking footwear. I use them now in any footwear I now wear.

Japan to Send Troops to Help Stop Bear Attacks
At first, I thought this was a goof. Durango has a bear problem this summer, but nothing like this. With the number of people killed by bears reaching a record nationwide, the defense ministry is preparing to send the military to one badly hit area to set traps. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/29/wo...

I unfortunately forget my insoles, and did R2R; I was sure that I would end up with a sore knee or hip. Fortunately I was fine. Yet, still I don't want to do that again.LindaAnn wrote:I wouldn’t hike more than a mile without a decent insole

Kilian Jornet wanted to summit 72 of the tallest peaks in the contiguous United States. He gave himself a month to do i
After 31 days and 72 summits, Mr. Jornet’s objectively absurd project was complete. He covered 629 miles on foot and biked an additional 2,568 miles, which outdistanced this year’s Tour de France by more than 400 miles. And he did all that while amassing 403,691 feet of elevation gain. https://www.n...
