Re: Dryfalls

No biggie. If I needed to express the same idea twice in the same paragraph I'd use both terms.

Re: 2013 National Parks Close for Government Shutdown

The latest News Release I saw states that the Park will open for seven days using state of Arizona funds. My first two questions would be: 1) In line with Elizabeth's comments - Where is this state money coming from and wouldn't it serve the state as a whole better to use it for really helping those...

Re: Can someone help me?

Joe. I see what you mean. But at the top right margin of the map Harvey hand wrote that routes lined in red were Clubb's. I think he might have just been using a lighter blue pen <or maybe not?> but the same pen is used for the route to the top of the Redwall below Set and also his route to Hall But...

Re: Can someone help me?

Harvey's maps are in the Special Collection at the Cline Library. Several years back inner canyon ranger Chuck Sypher, my mentor at Grand Canyon, was able to borrow the maps long enough to get them scanned. <A large format scanner was needed.> They are now digitized and available to anyone. These tw...

Re: Can someone help me?

I just checked Harvey's master hiking map. He did not reach the summit of the Tower of Set but he did reach Sumner Butte <marked as Sumner Point on the old maps>.

I'm tempted to try to slip something past the 'pumpkin' thingy but am afraid I'd be banned for life or something. Oh what the hell.

Re: Join me for Salt River Rafting for my 60th!!!!

Looks like the Salt has dropped just a bit, guess that was to be expected. Still should be plenty of water for your trip. Wish I could go but being 21 days out from a total knee replacement I'm sure not up for anything like that. <I doubt if I would even be able to stand the car ride out there and b...

Re: the Skinny on North Rim off-trail hikes

Dave mentioned Steve Roper and his guides. He gave him loads of appreciation for clueing him to the possibilities in the Sierra. I like the Sierra too but being a desert dog I fell for Grand Canyon. I enjoyed all of my experiences with Dave Baker and hope to be able to support him in his future Gran...

Re: petrified forest this weekend

A friend of mine gave me one of his old maps of the park the other day. It shows his entry from the west and his route over the peak and to the entrance road - with notes. Next time I see him I'll ask more details of his trek.

I'm thinking three to four hours is sufficient. That's about what it took me the couple of times I went thataway. A good side hike would be to drop your pack before the descent into Phantom and climb Cheops Pyramid.

Re: Death Clouds on Mt. Baldy

It is a pretty good book. Cathy did lots of research and interviewed tons of people. Even me, and all I had to do with the story was I threw Butch's <Ralph Coltrin's> newspaper route for a couple days while he was on the mountain. Oh. There are a couple photos of me in there too - - - as a ten-year-...

Re: Todd Martin Canyoneering Presentation 2/10/12 at AHS

I was at Summit Hut the other day and someone bought this book, and while they were talking to the guy at the counter, it was mentioned that you can't get the book anywhere near the GC because it is 'verboten'. Although I know how something like that could happen, I don't have the whole story. Anyo...

Re: Pusch Peak's book?

Trail 49 Linda Vista Loop goes nowhere near as high as the summit. It is only a foothills loop. What do you suppose the 'rusty sign' that many trip reports refer to says?

Whatever. Have fun. Make sure you die with your boots on :sl:

Re: Pusch Peak's book?

As late at the middle 1980's there were fairly good sized herds of bighorn on both sides of Pima Canyon. They aren't there now. My theory is that when Oro Valley began to explode <population wise> they just no longer enjoyed the views so moved on.
