In response to jeremy77777: I'm a single woman and I wouldn't dream of hiking without protection. Or overnight backpacking. I also carry a slim, easily concealed all metal medium length knife where it's easy to grab just in case. At night both weapons are beside my pad in the tent. Take heart jerem...
