Re: We really don't have that much...
In other words, while altitude of a peak doesn't make for a better experience, it does add difficulty and physiologic challenges for those who are not acclimated. My point was to throw the altitude part out of the equation and just compare effort involved covering the terrain itself from normal sta...

Overall height can often be somewhat irrelevant, depending upon the starting elevation too. Sure, Mt Washington in NH is "only" 6288, but then you can start hiking at 2000 feet or even less, depending on which direction you hike from. I've climbed Washington more than 50 times and for diff...

Re: NPS adding water bottle filling stations throughout Gran
There was some discussion about this over on the yahoo grand canyon forum. From most accounts, these filling stations have not been installed yet. I was at Grandview trail last weekend and there was nothing, nor was there a filling station at Hermit trail the previous weekend. I wonder if it will b...

Re: Touring bicycle build
My shifters are in the brake handles. Seems to work fine. I wouldn't want them on the bar ends because then I would have to move my hands. Doesn't make sense to me. I like mine on the brakes as well. But most triathletes rarely use the brakes during an event, and they want to stay in the aero posit...

I got my email that said they were mailing out the return authorization package and it should be here in the next couple of days. Turn around is supposed to be about a week or so after they receive the UPS shipment from me. Meanwhile I can continue to use the PN-60 itself. I really like the features...

Re: Touring bicycle build
Triathlon bars are comfy once you get used to them. The down side is that if you have the bar end shifters on the ends of the aero bars, you lose the STI shifting setup that is built into the standard road bike brake handles. I rode my tri-bike for 6 years (Cannondale Ironman 2000) before selling it...

Re: Day hike to the river and back
There are some spots where one could wander off in the dark for sure, but it's a pretty simple daylight hike and well trodden to boot. I can usually stroll across that stretch in under 2 hours...unless photography gets in the way and then all bets are off!

Is this whole topic an Apr 1st follow-up or what are you talking about? :o I can't find any info about NPS closures anywhere, neither on nps.gov nor on news websites. Got links? The best "link" would be the 6:00 PM evening news. :D If the federal government doesn't come to an agreement on...

Maxpower: Why would you hike out? If you are running the river, you can stay on the river until Diamond Creek, which is Hualapai Nation, tribal. You have to pay them to take out there, one way or the other--and most people do take out there. The concern is that you might not be able to go on furthe...

SPOT recall
I had just received my new DeLorme PN-60W with the SPOT system, and when I tried to register it with SPOT, I found there is a recall on a certain serial number batch. So they will be replacing the unit, and as a bonus, will be offering an additional 6 months of free service once I finally activate t...

I was coming up the Grandview Trail yesterday when I met a couple on their way down. The mentioned that someone had been hit by falling rocks dislodged from tourists scrambling above them. I got to the rim about 30 minutes after meeting this couple but everything must have been taken care of. I didn...

Plane down in canyon?
Has anyone heard an update on this? Grand Canyon, Ariz. – On Sunday, March 13, Grand Canyon Airport south of Grand Canyon National Park received a report from a general aviation pilot of an activated emergency locator transmitter (also known as an ELT). The airport immediately notified the National ...

First I'd have to develop a pretty close friendship with the guy that attached the cables to the rock wall. I'm supposing OSHA has not visited this site?

Re: Mid May South and North Rim Weather
I hiked down the Bright Angel trail yesterday on my way to climbing Battleship Butte, and traction devices were necessary only as far as just below the 1.5 mile house. There is very little snow cover on the rim as well, anywhere from nothing to just a several inches in the shady spots. A lot depends...
