Re: Itchy bugs
@Hansenaz chiggers maybe, although far less of a nuisance than chiggers from Missouri I used to battle. The wet winter and long grass combo, I ran into a dozen below the knee bites on a recent trip to Wet Beaver. The AZ chiggers don't seem to burrow as much, so it could be a chigger relative? 100% ...

Re: Help keep this newb from killing himself (Sycamore Creek overnight)
Agreed? You should probably stay closer to the city. Try a Supes loop like Marsh Valley loop. You'll get plenty a workout and it will be pretty cold there. Being a loop, a newb shouldn't get lost.nonot wrote:As to the rest of your questions, I am too confused about what you are asking about.

Re: April 2 night backpacking from Phoenix
West Clear Creek #17, starting at Bull Pen is prime at that time of year. Warm days nice nights in April. You can hike upstream following the creek, crossing multiple times will feel refreshing. Maiden Falls is a solid destination for a two night trip. You can loop back on Blodgett Basin trail, but ...

Re: AZT #9-20 - January
You'll probably have snow on Mt Lemmon, Oracle ridge likely dicey. Once you descend back to the 4,000 - 3,000 range should be fine. Water likely no issue in January, with rain we have and are going to get this week. As far as resupply, the store in Summerhaven you may want to call for hours. Next op...

Re: Motorized Electric Bikes On Trails
@FOTG Most of the people I encounter riding e-bikes, I don't believe are converted mountain bike riders. Otherwise they would wear helmets. They are cool I guess but I'll not ride one. I went to Action Ride shop in Mesa to buy a pair of gloves, and they asked me to enter an e-bike giveaway. I asked...

Should be some filterable water now, besides the usual spots. FW area perfect for kids trip, road in good shape as of last week.

@CannondaleKid me too. I'll bet the Anderson Mesa section got soupy sloppy sticky muddy and that was it. His bike looked like he was running more narrow tires than most riders. I thought his bike setup was cool looking, Canada themed, probably used to the cold, noticed he's 62. Hope I can try this ...

Looks like he veered off left of course this morning on the FUTS shortcut to Flag. Maybe taking a hotel day to avoid some snow? That area sucks if it's muddy.

@CannondaleKid He's about to go up Colonel Devin I guess? I always wonder how these athletes make a living. Who can leave their job for 2-3 weeks at a time to do these races multiple times a year, what kind of job is that? I do know the winner works for a bike shop in CO and is the head mechanic, s...

I can't imagine the down and up carrying a bike and gear. Looks like the leader just made it to the north rim.

I hadn't noticed that. I had read an article on the leader so that's how I knew. Some people say if you need an easier gear for uphill, then it's just as fast to hike-a-bike it until you can pedal again. I think they do a ton of hike-a-biking... on the AZT.

The 49 yo leader riding a single speed is about 28 miles away from loading his bike onto his backpack to hike down the S. Kaibab and then up the north. Piece of cake,
