Re: X-Mas'10 & New Year'11 (new GPS, Cell, SPOT, PLB, or ?)
azbackcountry: Re the ACR ... I looked at their site, then also at REI (because they have the handy compare button) and all te ACR models seem to be exactly the same other than in name and price. Do you know what the difference is between the "ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon", &q...

Re: SPOT
Is that also true of SPOT? In an emergency the Spot unit has to be activated just like the PLB. I have a ACR PLB and it has been wonderful. It cost more up front to buy but I have more peace of mind knowing it will get the signal out no matter what. I do have the ability to send out "I'm okay&...

Re: Grand Canyon Thunder River / Deer Creek Loop
One more question....How is the condition of the road to the Bill Haul trailhead? Is is passable by car or do you need a high clearance vehicle?

Re: Grand Canyon Thunder River / Deer Creek Loop
@Tortoise Hiker Some friends of mine did this hike about two years ago and I missed it for work. I've been kicking myself ever since.....
When I heard they were planning it again I told myself I had to make it. This should be another epic trip!! I will post lots of pics.

Grand Canyon Thunder River / Deer Creek Loop
In May I have a group that is doing the Thunder River / Deer Creek loop via Bill Hall. I am trying to piece together a GPS route so I have it for reference. I can find the GPS route for all sections except the section along the Colorado between Tapeats Creek and Deer Creek. I found one on backpacker...

@Rob del Desierto
Thanks for the info but I don't know the area very well and don't know the spots you are referring to. Would it be a bother to ask for you to map them and post a link?

I'm not sure about the AZGFD plans for species control but the Payson Roundup had an article last week about the pipeline. The plans for this have been in the works for years.....

Lake Powell Camping
I am going to be up in the Page area next weekend hiking the Wave and other local spots. I am looking for a fairly easily accessed campsite that I can use as a base camp near Lake Powell. I know about the Paria Canyon Guest Ranch and the BLM campsites at White House and Stateline but I am looking fo...

@SgtLumpy Yes it was just over Windgate Pass to the east. So cool to see something like that so close to town.

I was out there today hiking the Bell Pass/Windgate loop and a large desert tortoise sauntered across the trail. So cool to see!!

Re: North/South Bass River Crossing
My only concern is that there will be at least four or six of us with gear. If it was just me I would agree that it wouldn't be hard to get someone to ferry me across. I just don't know about our whole group. We are going to see what our options are. Thanks!

Re: North/South Bass River Crossing
It would be cool if the NPS rebuilt the old cable-car for crossing ... I totally agree. The old cable would certainly make this crossing a lot better. Although the rafts may not like being "clothes-lined" as they go down river..... :sl: @toddak Thx for the info. We are having a bit of a d...

North/South Bass River Crossing
I am starting to do a little research for a hike next year. I would like to do a Rim to Rim starting at North Bass, crossing the Colorado and then ascending up South Bass. Ideally the best option would be to get one of the passing rafts to take you across. Has anyone ever had any luck with this? Usu...

Re: Mooney Falls Drowning
This is very sad and hits close to home. I was at Supai last fall and was pulled under a small waterfall just below Mooney. Luckily it was only about 8' tall but it still was powerful enough. I wasn't expecting the water to drop off so suddenly. Thank goodness I came back up. The last thing I rememb...

Re: Paria Canyon
I was there in May of 2011 and the rabbit hole was clear. This would be a much easier route for a dog then scaling the wall with a rope. I am going to hike Buckskin again this coming June so if you go in May I might try and get a report from you on water holes, etc. When we went last year it was so ...

With the temps what they are supposed to be this week, I think ice will be a bigger factor than snow. If you're going on Sat. maybe we'll see ya up there... @Pam: Is anyone else going to join us on Saturday? I am flying to Florida tomorrow for business so I will not be back in town until late Thurs...
