Frog Tanks Trail #112 - trail conditions
Anyone been on Frog Tanks Trail #112 since all the rain? I was thinking about parking at Rogers Trough TH and doing the Rogers Canyon - Frog Tanks - Reavis loop this Saturday, but if Frog Tanks is a catclaw acacia thicket, then I'll have to think seriously about whether that ~21 miles is realistic i...

Re: Mormon Lake Resupply
I have heard conflicting reports about how good resupplying at Mormon lake is. Some say it is not adequate, others says it is. Should I mail a resupply box or resupply there? What is your take on this? I am starting my hike on March 23, going northbound. I sent a resupply box there. It was unnecess...

The wide open spaces along that stretch were a nice treat, although the lack of water wasn't so nice. And the camping options all seemed to be covered in grass filled with cockleburs (or some other spiny little thing). I probably wouldn't enjoy 10 days of that, but it was only a day or so.

Re: 5-6 days in the Grand Canyon
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I ended up requesting Grandview to Hermit (or vice versa) on the Tonto with flexible dates, camping locations, etc. It got denied yesterday, so I guess a new April hike will have to be devised.

Reliability order for mid sized trucks per CR: 1. Nissan Frontier 2. Honda Ridgeline 3. Chevrolet Colorado 4. GMC Canyon 5. Toyota Tacoma I am sure this is looking at the newer models, where Toyota did all it could to destroy the Tacoma with the 2016 redesign. The demand of a well cared for 2015 or...

5-6 days in the Grand Canyon
I'm looking for ideas for 5-6 days in the Grand Canyon in April. My hiking partner and I have plenty of overall hiking experience (AZT, Colorado Trail, High Sierra incl. Whitney, Highline through the Wind Rivers), but haven't done much in the Canyon. Two possibilities seem to keep coming up: 1. Goin...

Parking in Safford for a week or so
I'll be hiking a segment of the Grand Enchantment Trail in a few weeks--specifically Aravaipa Canyon to Safford. If I can park my vehicle in Safford, I have a shuttle to the start arranged. Does anyone have any suggestions for possible places to park in Safford for a week? I'm not looking for anythi...

The coldest night in the southern half was at Manning Camp in the Rincons. It got down to freezing or so. The coldest nights in the northern half were the first night above the Mogollon Rim (a flowing creek froze over) and then on the Kaibab plateau (close to freezing). The typical late March/early ...

Re: AZT thru hike in March 2018
Changing subjects- does anyone have recommendations on tents? I have a sweet Sierra Design Flashlight 1 FL that I really like, but I just went and hiked around Death Valley only to discover that there is no way that bad boy is getting staked into hard ground. So I think that tent is out... I have a...

Re: Resupply points
@regenerator If you buy an AZTA membership, you should get access to the databook, which includes lots of good info on resupply. The best resupply between Patagonia (mile ~50 if memory serves) and Oracle (mile ~200) is La Posta Quemada Ranch in Colossal Cave State Park. Check to see if they still a...

Re: AZT thru hike in March 2018
+1 to what Sredfield said. I went NOBO in 2013 and started mid-March. I had the capacity to carry 7 liters of water and rarely left a water source with less than 4 liters. 6 was the most I actually carried, and that was to make it from the water source to a dry camp a few miles later. I based my hik...

I went NOBO in Spring 2013 and started on March 17. I had a 30-degree bag and a single-wall tent. The only two nights it was not warm enough was just above the Mogollon Rim (a flowing creek nearby froze overnight) and on the Kaibab Plateau (got chilled by wind and couldn't get warm). It was warm eno...

Re: What kind of mileage are you getting
I went through 3 pairs of Inov8 Roclites (maybe 295s? I forget the exact model number) on the AZT. I thought they were decent lightweight trail runners, but they weren't tough enough for all the rocks. By the time each pair was approaching the end, it felt like I was walking in cardboard slippers. P...

+2 what Dallin said.
The store there is surprisingly good. Granola/protein bars, jerky, ramen, pb, etc. Definitely enough to fill out 2-3 days for the last stretch.

I have seen alot of suggestions - my personal fav in Utah was Little Wild Horse Canyon. +1. Bell Canyon and Little Wild Horse Canyon as a loop is a great hike. It's also right next to Goblin Valley, which is worth a stop. I'll join the crowd in recommending the Confluence in the Needles part of Can...

My friend punctured his inflatable NeoAir XLite mattress twice on the AZT. He was able to patch it both times using the included pre-glued strips. I punctured mine once, but it was on the last night, so I just patched it before I did my next trip. Both have held up since then with the patches. Apply...

I'm volunteering to drive hikers from Phoenix to Coronado NM
I hiked the AZT last year and I'm currently job-free, so I might as well shuttle some 2014 hikers. I'm in Phoenix (Ahwatukee) and can provide a ride on March 6 or any day next week (unfortunately busy on the 7th, 8th, and 9th). The only cost would be fuel, and I would very strongly prefer to shuttle...
