Re: Westward Arch, Goldfields

Good Morning, I've done a lot of hiking in the Goldfields. I followed Ted Tenny's book Hiking the Goldfields to find the arches he list in his book and found many others he does not mention. The book is the best source of information and can be found at the Superstition Museum. He has other books, b...

@hikerdw
We have gone to Westward arch via Rhyodacite Canyon as well. A bit further, but doable. Or come off FS 10 up and over into the north end of Rhyodacite Canyon and move south, then east to the arch. I'll ask Glen if he has that track and send it to you.

@hikingaz2
I've gone up Gateway Canyon to Delicate Arch, then continued to the west side of Golden Dome, then drop into the canyon to the west when I see Westward Arch. Glen Maclaughlin has the track. We have come in from the west as well, but much longer and more difficult.

Re: CQ HAZ Ham's (AKA Amateur Radio operators)

@BEEBEE I am jameslcox44 and our hiking club at Venture Out has been approached by our local HAM group. We are investigating whether the portable HAM radio's would be an advantage for our members. We currently have the emergency satellite transmitter after using the SPOT. We thought the SPOT annual...

Re: Apache Kid Cave

@Dave1
Thank you Dave. I find some of the books I have been reading leave me a bit confused. I am just getting into a new book 'Treasure Tales of the Superstitions' by T.E.Glover. I should have followed Jack Carlson's book a little closer. Glad you cleared that up for me.

Apache Kid Cave

While reading 'When Silver Was King', it mentions the Apache Kid and the Apache Kid Cave where he hid out in the Superstitions. It was supposedly 3 miles from Jim Bark's ranch. Would that be the same as the 'Wave Cave'? I can't think of any other large caves in the area. Anyone have any ideas?

Give me a call if you don't find someone. I would be willing to take the boys across the Ridgeline.

Re: Helicopter Crash in the Superststions

@Rick Vincent Hi Rick, Just wanted to let you know, we finally did your route of Reverse Flatiron. Glen posted it today. From the sprire, we did the hard left and moved up the left side of the wash, and followed the saddle to the ridgeline that led us to 5024. Thanks for your excellent instruction....

Quartz Peak Trail - Sierra Estrella, AZ :: Drive - 4WD?

I am planning a hike to Quartz Mountain on the 15th. Can you tell me about the drive in? I've read that a passenger car can make it in, but also sandy conditions require a high clearance four wheel drive? My group has hikers in early 70's as well as a 75 year old woman who will make the hike. I've s...

Checkmate Arch, AZ :: IQ Arch

Ted Tenny call that arch IQ arch in his book, 'Goldfield Mountain Hikes'. His route to take you there is a bit different and the one I like to take is about a 5 mile loop.
It's fun to go above the arch and behind it, then approach it from above. It is a fun hike to do to get up close to it.

Re: Goldfield Mountains- Hike Description Listings

I have the book, Hiking the Goldfields by Ted Tenny. He list all the arches as well as points of interest. The way Ted writes leaves some question for those of us without GPS. After a search for an arch is not successful, I have enlisted a friend with a GPS to locate the arch. After I've found it an...
