Re: Mormon Grove Trailhead
If you see a Private Property/No Trespassing sign at the 'pull-off', that is NOT the way to Mormon Grove TH. (I'm guessing you have driven on old AZ 87) PAST the FR 201 turn to go toward Mt Peeley & Mormon Grove TH's. FWIW, this is the way that Google Maps (incorrectly) routed me to Mormon Grov...

Re: delorme inreach
I used my inReach on my hikes over the past two weekends. My wife likes being able to keep track of where I am. As noted earlier, I don't think that the inReach sends out track points when it's sleeping, though it's possible that there's some setting that I'm missing which would make it do this. Tha...

Re: delorme inreach
When I use my Garmin inReach, I tell it to start tracking, then put it in my pack and forget about it. There have been several times when my wife, who is home trying to keep an eye on where I am, has not gotten updates to the track points - until the end of my hike. It seems that it buffered them up...

Re: Smart Outdoor Watch-What do you wear?
@Pivo Regarding Ambit 3 battery life, I've never run the battery down when doing up to 13 hour day hikes. There have been a few times when I've done (shorter) hikes on two consecutive days without recharging. According to manufacturer specs, the battery life is 20 hours with a 1 second recording in...

Re: Smart Outdoor Watch-What do you wear?
The Garmin fēnix 3 is looking pretty good I used to use a Garmin Fenix 2. It was okay for keeping track of distance in open terrain, but did not do well in areas with tree cover or hikes that went up the side of a steep hill. I found out just how bad it was one day when I did the Derrick - Horton L...

Re: delorme inreach
FWIW... Despite some problems in the beginning - mostly likely due to my not understanding how things work - my Garmin inReach has been working pretty well. When I do a hike that's a bit more adventurous than normal, my wife has been really happy that she's able to keep track of me throughout the day.

Re: Smart Outdoor Watch-What do you wear?
I've been using a Suunto Ambit 3 for keeping track of distance, time, elevation, and GPS track. I also load GPS routes from this site onto my Ambit 3 and use it as my primary means of GPS navigation. I've found the distance reported at the end of the hike to be fairly accurate except in situations i...

Re: 89%
I bought another pulse oximeter. The new one is a "Santamedical Generation 2 OLED Fingertip Pulse Oximeter". When I compare them side by side while sitting at my desk, the Santamedical device shows O2 saturation readings that are two to four points higher than the ZacUrate Pro 500DL. E.g. ...

Wow. I really like that photo.
That colorful umbrella is quite a contrast to the whole road warrior vibe.

Re: 89%
I have a ~$20 Pulse Oximeter that I purchased on Amazon ZacUrate Pro Series 500DL. I tried using that ~$20 pulse oximeter last night while on a relatively flat hike. I have doubts about its accuracy. Most of the time, it showed a pulse of around 60 with a blood oxygen saturation in the low 90s. I w...
Re: Umbrellas
Wow - an umbrella thread!
I saw some folks using umbrellas for sun protection while hiking to Zebra (slot canyon) in Utah recently.
It looked awkward. I was happy with my Tilley LTM2 "King of Brims" hat and long sleeve shirt.

@Jim_H I have a ~$20 Pulse Oximeter that I purchased on Amazon ZacUrate Pro Series 500DL . After reading your post, I put it on and watched my blood oxygen saturation for a few minutes while sitting at my desk. Pulse was in the low to mid 50s and oxygen saturation varied between 91% and 96%. This p...

Re: Fish Creek Canyon tomorrow 8/23..water levels?
@PrestonSands When I was there in early March, there was water directly under the bridge and more water later on, but it didn't seem like enough for swimming. I would guess that it's even drier now. I remember one especially green and stagnant pool while I was there. I don't think I'd want to swim ...

I gave up on it too. Here's why... "If a product delivered this benefit "Reduces the amount of water that enters the tent because of the higher water resistance of this tent material", how valuable would that be to you?" Okay, that's fine. But the next question is: "Why woul...

Re: Rappel Sites
@Dave1 Another idea... Hike to Tom's Thumb and do the class 4 route on the West Corner (which is the name of the route). I'd suggest bringing a few slings and stoppers to protect the route just in case. According to the page at summitpost.org, you rap down the west face. They say that a single 60 m...

Looking for some rappel sites to practice at. Somewhere between 100' and 200'. Something I can scramble to the top of without any technical climbing. 1-2 hours from Phoenix. Atlantis. This is a climbing area that's just east of Superior. From Phoenix, drive through Superior and then continue on tow...
