Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

@LindaAnn GooseFeet Down Filled socks are a WINNER along with HOT HANDS Toe & Sole warmers: Tuesday, 10 Nov 2020 @5,000' elevation; I returned to the same Thomas Creek campsite this afternoon & set up camp. I have some new equipment & am doing several things a bit different from my cold feet experi...

Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

@big_load I think most everyone sleeps better when their feet are comfy warm/toasty. Here is a link to what I bought: https://goosefeetgear.com/products/down-socks/ I selected Orange & paid $79.00 to have them 75% overfilled with 850 fill Down. I'm planning to slip into my usual pair of polypro boo...

Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

@LindaAnn
I'm giving GooseFeet Down socks a hard look-see. I've always had a favorable bias toward Down as my insulation product of choice.
5 minutes later - I just ordered a pair of Down Socks.
Thank you Linda Ann

Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

@ALMAL Good Question! NO. I'm in my mid-70s, I have no medical problems, am NOT taking any prescriptions, workout on my Total Gym 5 days out of 7, start each day with a set of 25 pushups & 35 deep knee bends, & can still chin myself twice; 5'3", 107#, small skeletal structure, & am regular. Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

@wildwesthikes Thank you, thank you, thank you; for taking so much time & effort to delve into the details of your adventure, hike, clothes, gear, sleep system, etc. Have you ever tried or use any type of chemical heater inside your sleeping bag? Having cold feet, all night long, was a new & unplea...

Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

As Paul Harvey woud say, & Now for the Rest of the Story . This overnighter was a test of MEeee & my equipment. I intentionally camped less than 1/4 mile from my car so I could pack up & return to the bunker if I got cold. What puzzles MEeee is I was comfy warm from head to ankles; only my feet got ...

Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

@whereveriroam
HOT HANDS Toe & Sole warmers is exactly what I'll have with me from now on. I've been scolding myself because I had a supply of the inside the bunker. I didn't have any in my backpack. I won't make that mistake again!

Re: COLD FEET? - when overnighting

@whereveriroam I put on a fresh, clean, dry pair of socks B4 crawling into my sleeping bag. I am going to try HOT HANDS, those chemical heaters for toes/soles to see if that works. All the rest of me was comfy warm, all night; but my feet were like they were in a frig all night. I've never experien...

COLD FEET? - when overnighting

Keeping my feet warm is the hardest body part for me to keep warm when inside my sleeping bag.
WHAT have you done to keep your FEET/TOES from getting cold when inside your sleeping bag? Plzzzz, don't suggest buying a sleeping bag with a lower temperature rating. That's NOT an option.

I, too have prepared my own meals, weighed out a portion, put the food inside a 1QT FREEZER ziplock baggie & frozen the contents.

Re: Headlamp Alternative - Waist Lamp ?

@LindaAnn
NU 20 is my Headlamp. I removed the headband that came with the Headlamp & replaced it with #36 Bankline & a small cord lock.
Streamlight 2L is the flashlight I normally carry in its pouch & attached to my waist belt.

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 64

@wildwesthikes InReach has been a turn off for MEeee from the get-go simply because the battery can't be replaced by the user. Admittedly, I'm wallowing around in the dark ages with my ancient 62ST & am not willing to go through the travails of transition with a so-called SMART phone. My 4G Flip ph...

Re: Have you lost or almost lost your GPS?

@wallyfrack My name & Phone number appear on the opening screen when my GPS turns on. Thanks for your reply, I'm going to put a piece of paper with my name & address inside along with the batteries, just in case. I'm going to do the same thing with my PLB, except the info will be secured on the out...

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 64

@Grasshopper
I understand. I guess I'm just hopelessly wandering around in the dark ages in terms of electronic devices. However, I do have & enjoy the use of indoor plumbing inside the bunker & a manual tranny in my vehicle.

Re: Have you lost or almost lost your GPS?

@CannondaleKid I, too, have come to the same conclusions in terms of my Garmin hike distance is exaggerated & accumulated elevation gain is not enough. I just prefer to be connected via Satellite than a Cell Phone Tower. In principle/theory I choose to believe a Cell Phone is NOT as accurate as a p...

Re: Have you lost or almost lost your GPS?

@CannondaleKid
Running over one COUNTS!
Dropping one that causes it to shatter into little pieces also counts.
I'd bet a shiny dime many more Cell Phones have been lost/gone South than GPS units.

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 64

@Grasshopper
My sentiments exactly. I have absolutely no need/wish/desire for a so-called Smart Phone. When I'm out hiking/geocaching I want a Satellite telling me where I am, not a cell phone tower.
No Cell phone & going for a hike or geocaches by myself is the ultimate Social Distancing.
