Re: Best Trail Tips and Tricks for easy tasty grub!

I just used pro deal to buy a crapload of Backpackers Pantry food for my upcoming trips ... breakfasts, dinners, and desserts - well over a hundred dollar's worth retail, all for less than fifty bucks including delivery. Can't wait to sample them. I have tried the pad thai and the chocolate cheesec...

Re: How do you carry your handgun while backpacking?

I refuse, however, to have a gun mounted to anything but myself. Having it attached to a pack strap would mean never being able to set the pack down without undoing the velcro connection every time to take the setup with ya. The Safepacker is fantastic for in-hand carry though, or throwing it in a ...

Re: Best Trail Tips and Tricks for easy tasty grub!

HOT BREAKFAST CEREAL with DRIED FRUIT I am sure the standard instant oatmeal packets are a staple for many backpackers, and they still are for us. But we have recently starting bagging our own. We are really partial to the Bob's Red Mill line. Yes, they cost a little more, but the quality and taste ...

Re: 6 Days in the Supes, questions about a LONG loop

Metal, sounds like we were both up there this last weekend. Fortunately for me, I missed the crappiest stuff on Friday and early Saturday, but still saw plenty of cold and muck over the weekend. I had to shorten my route as well, and missed both the big scenic stops that we had planned. I thought I ...

Re: Best place to grab a post-hike craft beer

Well, I looked for the HandleBar on the way out of the Supes yesterday, and we found it--it was about 1 or 2 on a Tuesday afternoon. The building was not only empty but literally looked abandoned! We ended up going somewhere over on the west side. Its a new place called Taps on Northern and 101. It ...

Re: I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE??

We did it but things did NOT go as planned... :) I posted a triplog for anyone that is interested. We didn't have any problems getting in (there were a couple places we had to cross the swollen river but I gotz a TRUCK!). We were however delayed by road repair on the way out on Tuesday.

Re: I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE??

Well we just got hit HARD here in the west valley too, the downspout on my house looked like what I hope Reavis Falls looks like tomorrow!!! But it's cleared out already, drying rapidly, and all weather forecasts I can find for the supes show AM showers at the worst--we wont even be hiking until mid...

Re: I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE??

Looking at the elevation profile on Reavis Trail, I was afraid that it didn't lend itself to camping... Oh well. We've actually been to the Frog Tanks-Plow Saddle Junction last month (we were hiking the FT trail), so I know where that is--and I would not try to drink the green brown water in those c...

Re: Best place to grab a post-hike craft beer

Hmmm, I just might have to try out the Handlebar in AJ that several posters mention. After my hike this weekend, I think I am going to be very interested in pullin back a cold one. Thanks!

Re: I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE??

I think I found a route that will work. I start at Reavis TH, Reavis trail south, out/back to Reavis Falls, Reavis to Reavis Gap, to Campaign, to Fireline, out/back to Circlestone, to Reavis, back out to TH. I posted a route for feedback (Reavis Gap-Circlestone Loop--couldn't figure out how to get t...

cactuscat, I agree!!! Did anything in my posts contradict that? I don't think so! When looking a the thumbnail, I was certain you were showing feces on that rock! Hopefully we can agree that it is the placement (via laziness or ignorance) that is the most heinous aspect of this "rude pumpkin"... (he...

Re: I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE??

joe, that does look like it will do the trick! The video made it look pretty easy, so I can't wait to try it. I think my wife wants to hit the big ticket item we missed last time--Reavis Falls. So I think I'm gonna plan something from the Reavis Trailhead, and just do an out and back on some of the ...

Re: leave no trace

laughable argument? laugh away. just to clarify: deciding the best part of the package is used, so now the package is useless, and littering it, is equal. no matter what the packaging is.. either can or core. same thing. i did not imply that the two materials are the same, or that they last the sam...

Re: leave no trace

Well, I don't know how old that poll is, but I would have to answer "no" as well. First off, I don't agree with the "no campfire" dictum. It's fun, warm, and can imo be helpful to the environment to clean up some of the dead detritus on the ground. I don't always make one, and certainly abide by all...

Re: Best Trail Tips and Tricks for easy tasty grub!

CHICKEN SALAD WRAP For us, a vaccuum-pack of tuna/salmon/chicken is an automatic part of everyone's backpacking kit. Initially, they were intended as an emergency food source that would simply stay in the packs, all the time. And this recipe was our attempt to make the meat into a meal. To make this...

INDIAN FOOD We just barely tried this on our last trip, and it was flat out AMAZING! If you like Indian Food, you will probably love this! We tried the TASTY BITE ready-to-eat entrees, specifically the BOMBAY POTATOES and the CHANNA MASALA. Both were delicious. Admittedly, everything tastes better a...

Best Trail Tips and Tricks for easy tasty grub!

I see a lot of threads in here for favorite restaurants or for folks personal recipe's. And although I have a couple restaurants and recipes that I will share too, I was also looking for a thread where we could share all our best tips for eating EASY--something in between the obvious (throw a pack o...

Re: Value sleeping bags

I'm looking for a 15-20 degree bag that is relatively lightweight but is in the cheap range ($150). I'm about 6'2" so I need a tall. The best choice I have so far is the Kelty Cosmic 20 down which is running $110 for the tall at campmor.com right now. Anyone have any other recommendations? Like the...

Re: I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE??

Joe, I was hoping that is what public meant. I was able to make a couple neat looking routes in the western supes, and was secretly hoping someone would be able to view them and provide details on water points, preferred direction, or route mods to hit scenic areas. BUT... I was talking to my wife, ...
