Anyone been in the Superstitions since the Woodbury fire? Recent rains will mean water in the backcountry. I'm planning on being out there starting in January.
Did Circle Stone get burned?
What is Miles TH like?

Re: May start date NOB
It's not uncommon to see temps over 100* by mid-April. May is usually hotter, and then June gets hotter than May. I do a lot of hiking in the Superstitions, but by mid-April I am done until October. Biggest rattler I have seen in AZ was on the north side of Saguaro NP in March in the grass, crossing...

Re: Post Your 2019 NOBO Start Dates
Two of us, starting from Montezuma Pass on sunday evening, Feb. 24. right now the plan is to follow Montezuma Canyon Road from the pass to where the AZT crosses and pick up the AZT there. This will completely bypass Miller Peak Wilderness, and the snow. Does anyone really expect Bathtub Springs will...

I am starting Thursday, Feb. 21. I am 70 and hike slow. You might see me out there with another guy, same age.
I wish you well!

AZT Oracle to Picket Post in January/Feb 2019
Wondering if anyone is going to be out caching water in this section of the AZT in the near future. If so, I'd appreciate some help in setting water out for me. :) I think if I was sure of water on this section of the AZT I'd be interested in doing this section the end of January, early February. I ...

Re: Possible AZT thru-hike in Spring 2019
About this time of year, every year, I start thinking Trail, somewhere, anywhere. I am slow, like to hike late into the day and take my time getting up, and take breaks along the way. Somedays I go faster- but I am always slow going up. In the morning if I am on the trail between 8- 9 am, that's a g...

Re: Early NOBO January Start
If its a low snow season, the regular AZT should be doable.
I am 70 in December. I have been thinking about doing the southern section of the AZT starting in Feb and go as far as I can. I hope this is a wet winter for this area. When the water is in the Creeks southern AZ is fine hiking.

@Preacher Too soon for me to be out since hip surgery. I hope to be ready to go by March, but this is looking like a very dry year. I plan on getting into Miles TH to see how Pinto Creek looks but my guess Campaign Ck is dry this year, which would be sad. We'll keep in touch. I have been looking fo...

Did you cache any water? I can put some out on the Kevin-Florence road for you. There is a cache box there for hikers.
Who are you doing this with?

Re: Garmin Maps the Arizona Trail
I use those maps in my GPS. A few times I have been a bit confused with them, but overall, with the printed maps, and the GPS you will do ok.
If you are going to do the entire trail I would recommend you just but the printed maps from the ATA and save yourself some time, and money.

Preacher, did you get to do this section? If so, any reliable water out there?
I would like to do this section in March sometime.
I am still getting over hip surgery otherwise I would have liked to try this with you- 12 miles is a good day for me, too.

2018 Water Reports Border to Picket Post
I am still recovering from hip surgery the end of November. I haven't been out yet this year. But I would like to hike from Rodington Rd to Picket post starting the end of Feb- if there is water. Usually by this time of the year I would have been into Miles TH for a 3- 4 nighter to check water sourc...

I had a new hip installed on Nov 27. I am hoping by the end of February I can be back out in the back country or on the AZT heading NOBO from Saurago NP for Picket Post. then in the Fall start on the Utah border and hike SOBO back to Roosevelt Dam. I have done the section of the AZT from Picket Post...

Re: Latest SoBo Start on the AZT?
I was into the Doc today on a MRI consult I had last week. MRI shows I have avascular necrosis and need a new hip joint. The right leg and hip are deteriorating rather rapidly. Surprisingly so. I should have surgery in 4- 5 weeks. So end my plans for a sobo hike on the AZT this October. Maybe next y...

Re: Latest SoBo Start on the AZT?
@steelcranium Seems I have run into some complications. I had a MRI on my hip last week. I thought it was just a groin problem. Ortho doc said, no, its a hip. So he ordered an MRI. If that looks ok, I would like to start on the 20 or 21st from the border and go to Flagstaff. Everything is still in ...

Starting Southbound Oct 10- Water?
I am looking at getting dropped off at the Utah border on October 9 or 10. Water is scarce on the Kaibab plateau. How scarce? I am not sure I'll have an opportunity to cache any water before starting. at one spot at the junction of segments 43 and 42 on Winter rd. I talked to the backcountry office ...

Latest SoBo Start on the AZT?
I have an offer for a ride up to the Utah border to start a Sobo hike back towards Pine.
I am wondering, is a mid- late October start from Utah too late in the year? Maybe get going around October 20.
This offer just popped up today from someone I know in Pine.
Can I do this?

Re: Spring 2017 Thru Hikers
My hiking plans for the AZT have changed. Two hikers starting with the WarriorsHike program in March plan to start with that group to help get them started and them move on ahead and do the AZT together. One of the two has his father who will be following along as support to help with water and resu...
