Re: Tonto NF Closes Trailheads

After hearing about the over-crowding issues, I wonder if/when they'll close 88 back down to non-essential traffic. Regardless, I'm glad they're closing down these areas, and hope that the city/state parks in Phoenix follow suit.

Re: Mazatzal Question

@desertadapted It’s doable. Deer Creek may be the most overgrown of your trails. Did a similar, shorter loop a few years ago - [ Triplog ]

Re: November Mazatzal Wilderness

@eaufdembrink this side is much easier to access. Chilson, Bear, and Horse Camp have great water. If you head up from the east side, don't try to drop down the west side on any of those trails (Davenport, Willow, Sheep)... they all are very overgrown and difficult to navigate. Like 2 hours per mile...

Re: November Mazatzal Wilderness

@joebartels - I was definitely thinking Midnight Mesa Loop for this one too! It's on the upper end of the mileage, but well worth the extra walk. @eaufdembrink there is pretty dependable water at Willow Spring, Mountain Spring, both crossings on Wet Bottom, and then Dutchman Grave. If you're lookin...

Re: Mazatzal Wilderness Info Sought

MAZZIES https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=16104 Plan on taking three days for this loop and bring some good navigation devices. If you survive and/or enjoy this loop, you’ll be hooked. This is a gem of an adventure and gives a great sampling of how awesome (and difficult) the trails out there ...

Re: Short Hike with kids

Hackberry Springs is my go to for a short local hike for my boys (same ages). It has good shaded sections, low traffic, is free, and no bike traffic. Plus, a spring!

@chumley  I’ve used it twice now w good results, both times were based on my lat/long. So maybe usage difference? Dunno.

InReach will give weather reports, it’s pretty awesome. Costs “1 message”, iirc, from your plan.

Re: MCSO Copter Rescues 24 off Mt Ord

CAMRA has more details on their fb page - definitely wasn't 'off Mt Ord'. Sounds like the group did a couple of things wrong, like splitting the 24 into 4 chunks, which complicated the rescue.

@mazatzal hey, there are good parts and there are bad in that wilderness. I almost mentioned a certain stretch of Red Hills but figured you might convince Joe to blacklist my account :)

Re: What's your least favorite?

Any trail w/ people on it, yaddah yaddah. More serious answers... Barkley Basin stretch of Dutchman - that oven gets hot in the summer, and it's usually the last leg of a long loop. Upper 2.5 miles of Barnhardt. The climb is done, just feels tedious to get over to the saddle. Davenport Trail from Se...

Re: Challenging Hike Suggestions

Buzzard's Roost would be a good one - it's relatively close (Peralta TH is a common start) and has a bit of mean-ness to it. Plus it's been on my todo list for a while, so... hint hint nudge nudge.

Re: Idea for a two night overnighter in early December

Welcome! Default recommendation is probably this: https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=1441, especially if you're looking to experience some sweet, sweet prickly desert. If you're looking for something a bit tougher and higher elevation (thus lower temps) there is also this https://hikearizona.co...

Re: two nights trail

Default response: Red Tanks Loop https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=1441 It has water, pleasant campsites, lots of variety, about an hour's drive from Phoenix, and can be reached with passenger vehicle. If you're looking for something less desert-y, further out from Phoenix, then there are plen...
