San Raphael Fire - Canelo Pass
Hey there hikers, We live at Lyle Canyon and the San Raphael Fire has burned over Canelo Pass and through the parking area ( by the fire map ) we monitored the fire all day at Canelo pass and left when it got into the trees below 3/4 mile from the road. It swept over the Little Outfit ranch and came...

Re: Hiking Boots or Trail Runners?
Never! I've just tried it all cause I've had PF......the five fingers were a big mistake for me. I'd like to be as natural as possible but I'm no longer a spring chicken. And I've got bone spurs....but I can still hike and that's all that matters. The interesting thing is that most long distance hik...

Re: Hiking Boots or Trail Runners?
Yea Joe as a matter of fact I do. I've gotten 2,550 miles on my Danner Explorer boots and 1000 miles on the Cascadia model which still look great and have plenty of tread, and I'm considering resoleing the Explorer model only cause I wear the outside down a lot, otherwise they could go another two t...

Re: Hiking Boots or Trail Runners?
I use Danner light cascade boots, they finally made a women's desert compatable model with no goretex that is just awesome, but like all their boots you've got to take the time to break them in. Once done it's like custom boots molded to your feet and they last for years. And can be re soled. I also...

OH I was gone all summer on the PCT and northern AZ...didn't know they killed the bear...
Poor bear. You know there are some nice hikes and spots to camp up on the Crest Trail in the National Forest too if you want to hike higher up above the fort.

Re: Huachuca Closures
There are picnic grounds not campgrounds in Garden canyon. I went up there yesterday after getting my pass at the gate (30 days, and if you have a felony conviction forget it). As far as I know there's no camping in Garden as there are signs everywhere stating you've got to be out of there at dark. ...

Re: Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal
I agree with the above, MS makes a very good point. How much food and water can YOU carry before its just not practicle/doable or even fun to hike a "trail" that's not really a trail but a bunch of trails linked with proposed routes? The Hayduke is a route with quite a few logistical resup...

Re: Pickup at Southern Terminus
Unfortunately I am leaving for Ohio but there is a local shuttle service that is located in Hereford. If no one here offers I'd call these folks and ask if they'd pick you up at the bottom of the hill by the museum at Montezuma pass. You can take Joes canyon trail down to the pavement or walk the di...

Re: Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal
Nope, I'm also off trail. I was just about to descend to LF Ranch and I got a message on the InReach that a family emergency requires my attention. I backtracked out to Strawberry where my husband picked me up. In a week I'll be back on trail SOBO but closer to home since I'll still need to be avail...

Re: Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal
I ran into Shawn Redfield at the Pine Supermarket just before the trail work crew event at Pine Trailhead and he mentioned that they are planning a trail maintenance job in this winter or coming spring for the Mazatzal Wilderness area. Might be a heck of a work "party". ;^)

Actually that was intel i got from another hiker...wrong. The Blue Ridge RANGER STATION is the place they remove the spigot. When I got to the BR Campground yes it was closed but there is great water pumped from the Moqui spring above it to water boxes buried in the earth by each campsite and those ...

April is good, this year we had over 70 starters
between March and April but April had the most rainfall. For the first time in 25 years we had swimming holes south of Parker lake and in the Santa Rita's. No telling what 2016 will be like.

Re: Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal
Wyoming is on trailjournals.com which is where he let us know he and Skipper got off trail. Goliath also got off trail because of foot problems. I'm still on trail being very conservative with milage due to heat and water logistics. I met another hiker from Alaska, he complained about the water issu...

The Blue Ridge campground removes the faucet
Spigot on Mondays since it's closed on that day.
So don't depend on water there on Mondays....

I live at the southern terminus, but I'll be elsewhere during the time requested. You have next to nothing to worry about hiking down here, in fact you are more liable to meet more BP agents rather than anyone/thing dangerous. Just respect the wildlife, you may see some rattlesnakes. Every bear I've...

Thank you for access to that document. My husband and I are ex helitack working out of Hannigan Meadows in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I can't wait to show him this. He may have seen some of these towers or the remnants of them.

Re: FS to remove Salt River wild horses
Im new here. But I trained and rode competitively for 47 years and have done feral horse photography in the Apache Sitgreaves. These horses are not native or natural but feral. Most come from broken down fenced areas near reservations or are horses set loose during the economic hard times. Their num...
