Re: hiking ban during hot temperatures
So I start hiking when it's 105 degrees and when I reach the summit it's 111 degrees at the designated temperature recording location. What do I do now, magically transport myself home? Beam me up Scotty!

Re: Tips for hiking in the extreme heat

Re: Trivia (added to Home Page)
@LansfordHastings So are you reporting that Arizona's peak total (3,928) is derived by the 200-foot drop applied by AMC? As far as I can tell, there seems to be no recognized standard, so I doubt that the AMC guidelines mean much when it comes to other areas. I guess it's more a case of "make ...
Re: Trivia (added to Home Page)
Yes fascinating and impressive. But after looking that up myself, that's why I posted the question. Which remains unanswered. I wonder what peak criteria the HAZ trivia count uses. It's a figure repeated all over the web but I haven't found one with a definition. For reference, the Appalachian Moun...

Re: Route Scout - GPS Topo Mapper & Recorder
I just installed this and will try and give it a workout on my next hike. Now this is coming from an old geezer who came into the Android phone system, kicking and screaming. When I was in the hospital, my son called from New England and told my wife, "Tell Dad to get a smart phone so we know w...

Re: Missing Hiker - Diana Zacarias
On Monday, I hiked down Hermit, Boucher, out to Dripping Springs, then exited via the Dripping Springs trail (old Silver Bell) to Eremita Mesa, then followed the forest roads back to the Abyss on Hermit Road. Saw no signs of Diana (clothing, hat, backpack, etc) on my route. The missing person poster...

Re: Missing Hiker - Diana Zacarias
I have a tentative hike on Sunday 4/17 to go down the Hermit Trail, thence out to Dripping Springs with a possibility of continuing on to the Dripping Springs trail head (zone SC9) and then either loop around the forest roads to come out at the Abyss shuttle stop or possibly go back down via the Wal...
