I'm still relatively new to AZ but I've been living in Elgin for 8+ months now and see them almost daily hanging out / enjoying in the grassy fields. They're really neat creatures.

Oops, I just saw the title of this... mods, please re-direct if needed... that account I just posted was for the Mustang Fire not the Smith Fire]... too many to keep track of this year...! :?

Re: 2017 Smith Fire

@Pivo On the evening before (Tuesday) AZHiker456 witnessed dry lighting start several wildfires in the Sonoita area. Maybe she'll post the pictures she took of aerial resources dropping retardant on the flames. Fortunately firefighters got a handle on those fires very quickly. I don't think I'll ev...

Re: 2017 Lizard Fire (Dragoon Mtns)

Not a pretty scene in the Dragoons. :( I hiked a few peaks in the Northern Santa Ritas (afternoon of 6/10) and could see the smoke pretty clearly all the way from there (45-50 miles away) ... then off to Sierra Vista for groceries, post-hike and it is a smokey mess in that area... the latest updates...

Sorry to hijack the thread again, but I am just a wee bit slightly envious of your home location! And thank you for the reports. Sure thing! I'm glad you and some others to appreciate the reports. :) Luckily today the skies look blue for the first time in the direction of the fire. Although its not...

Re: Sawmill Fire closes AZT and some Santa Rita Trails

Just unreal... the total cost just to fight the fire as of right now is 4.26 million (http://tucson.com/news/local/cost-to-fight-sawmill-fire-now-tops-million-overcast-skies/article_6a19e0b0-2c7b-11e7-9496-5f233adfb891.html). Total acreage burned is estimated at around 47,000. As forecasted, the win...

@flagscott Excellent points! @others I think we've all said our piece, and I'm hoping that anyone interested in continuing the debate over the fire topic can take it to a different thread... ...shifting gears back to the topic at hand: for those who have been using this thread as your sole source f...

Re: Sawmill Fire closes AZT and some Santa Rita Trails

AZHiker456 can you tell what the fire has done to the oak trees? If they survive I think things will look pretty "normal" before too long. From what all of the locals that I’ve been talking with directly have been saying, the vegetation at the higher elevations has largely been spared and it’s prim...

Re: Sawmill Fire closes AZT and some Santa Rita Trails

Inciweb, or whoever is supposed to be updating it for this fire, is woefully behind. Still the same quick and dirty map from yesterday. Tell me about it! The three best sources of "news" (in no particular order) have been: a) Looking out my windows / stepping out my front door b) Updates / texts fr...

Re: Flagstaff Shortcut (Rts 89 & 180)?

@friendofThundergod No worries; I completely agree and was not knocking you but just more or less curious at to when you drove it / when the last time was that someone made it through with a low clearance vehicle. I am VERY familiar with just how quickly dirt roads can deteriorate... the dirt road ...

@AZHiker456 @chumley I agree with Chums, was also going to suggest 418, but was not sure how much you had your heart set on the other road. I can confirm that a Ford Focus can make the entire length of road and very scenic :) :o :o :o Just curious when you pulled that off... I drove the entire leng...

Re: Flagstaff Shortcut (Rts 89 & 180)?

Thank you guys so much; I REALLY appreciate it!

As for having my heart set on a certain way - that would be a definite no. Right now its all about the shortest way from Point A to Point B so I can maximize time on the trails. Of course, shortest doable way. :)

Flagstaff Shortcut (Rts 89 & 180)?

Does anyone know if this http://hikearizona.com/map.php?QX=5544 [yellow track] is a viable cut over option for an HCV without driving all the way around [i.e. red track is what I want to avoid]? Also, are there other viable cut over options for getting from 180 to 89 without going all the way back i...

Re: The 2016!! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

So maybe I've been living under a cave [or out on the trails] but I honesty never even noticed the HAZ stats until I had extra time on my hands the past few weeks... ...that said, does anyone happen to know if there is a way to go back in time and see the stats for a given day or month; so, for exam...

Joe, thank you so much... that answered my questions and then some! It's gonna take some time to figure out / fine-tune all of the bells and whistles, but I've got the waypoints down, along with some of the other basics. :)

Creating Waypoints

Sorry if this has been asked, but I did a quick search on the forums and checked the FAQ and could not quickly find and answer: Does anyone know how to load waypoints to a GPS route on Route Scout? Last weekend, I figured out how to add a waypoint while en route by 'eye-balling' the topo; but what I...
