Hey, let me know how the book turns out - whether or not it's a good read.

Re: Won the Wave Permit! Please help!!!

@Dust8713 Coyote Buttes South is below The Wave and is more red than the white/orange of The Wave. https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=1340 White Pockets is equally as interesting, but you really should have the right vehicle and experience driving in deep sand. Or you can hire a guide to take ...

Indian Bread Rocks...The name alone sounds interesting! With everyone's suggestions I'll be tethered to this computer for hours. ; - )

Re: Ideas for Camping/Hiking in Jan thru late-March ?

@rwstorm Thanks for the idea about Anza-Borrego. Actually, that area's been in the back of my mind ever since we saw it featured on The Desert Speaks or some other PBS show. In fact, I ordered their brochure. The brochure was, unfortunately, not very inspiring and Blake kinda' wrinkled his nose at ...

Ideas for Camping/Hiking in Jan thru late-March ?

Hello! My husband and I have been trying to find a variety of good locales for 3 - 7-day base-camping/hiking trips in January through late-March. We've been in KOFA, Organ Pipe, Guadalupe Mtn NP, Big Bend, and Cabeza Prieta in the past year or so and would like to try something new. I should also me...

Re: HAZ member imike, sad news

So sorry to hear about Mike. I loved seeing his photos and reading his triplogs. Looked like he was always having fun and his enthusiasm was contagious. So sad.

Re: How to improve one's sense of direction?

For me, studying a map in advance and reviewing it after a hike is very helpful in "cementing" in my mind where I was, direction of travel, which canyon we turned into, etc. Maybe try a small hike without your GPS? I think back on my career, which involved a lot of travel by car and plane, and remem...

Re: Need Help with inReach Explorer

For those folks with an inReach GPS, we don't believe you can give a track a name on the device itself. We're sure you cannot rename a track on the computer. We simply turn on tracking when we start a hike and stop tracking when we're finished. But, on our next outing we'll see if somehow we can nam...

Re: Need Help with inReach Explorer

Sadly, it seems like the two Garmin support people that I spoke with didn't really know how their software works. I did (finally) receive an email from Garmin answering some of my questions that I'll share with HAZers below. (1) We cannot clear a track log. While in the track menu, we hit the Clear ...

Re: Need Help with inReach Explorer

Optimal handling of GPS files is always a bit mysterious to me but the method I use to go from Garmin to HAZ is to go through Basecamp. With Basecamp (free from Garmin) you can select which files you want to pull off your GPS and then also which files you want to export as .gpx to upload to HAZ. Ba...

Re: Need Help with inReach Explorer

Surprise! Garmin actually sent me an email explaining how I can solve the fourth problem....(4) Similarly, I cannot be selective about the tracks that I export (to get them onto HAZ). When I hit export, it exports every single track/hike and then there'll all uploaded to HAZ. Then, I have to delete ...

Re: Need Help with inReach Explorer

When we come home from a hike(s) we sync the device with our computer and each new hike(s) is automatically entered as a unique track.

Need Help with inReach Explorer

Hello. We have an inReach Explorer (not the Plus version). I have been on the phone with DeLorme/Garmin for hours recently and cannot figure out the following. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! (1) We cannot clear a track log. While in the track menu, we hit the Clear button and both "reset tri...

Re: Ideas needed for glamping trip

We agree with other folks that think 1 - 2 hours away from a flush toilet is way too far...especially if you have to go in the middle of the night! For dry camping with no amenities, we've adopted the toilet seat/5-gallon bucket/trashbag/kitty litter method. Not the same as a flush toilet, but accep...

Can't Find Posted Photo of Homemade Trailer/Tent

A day or so ago, if I recall correctly, I saw recent (?) photos posted of a homemade (nice and shiny) cargo trailer with a purchased "roof" tent and annex. The photo also had a Toyota FJ. I'd like to share the photos with a friend, but can't seem to find it. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, all. I did ask the Monticello BLM, but they refused to give out the number. They were also pretty much useless when it came to answering my questions.

Actual Phone Number for Kane Gulch Ranger Station?

Hello, I used to have the phone number for the Kane Gulch Ranger Station, but have misplaced it. I know the station doesn't open until Sept 1st, but I thought I'd try to get it before then. The number listed on their website is (435) 587-1500. However, this is actually the number for the BLM station...
