Re: Guthook's AZT app

Ditto on Fireflys comment . I also kept a copy of the AT book on my Kindle app as well.
I also carried a small 5 ounce solar panel rather than a battery pack due to the increased load on phone battery .

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Hey Jim I was wondering if you would post one of those snow accumulation maps for the Huarache's ?? and southern ranges on the trail ? Forecasts into March would be greatly appreciated . I don't mean to be a pain in the arse ....., I follow your thread religiously and really appreciate all your upda...

Re: NOBO AZT Spring 2018 ~ Mid-March

I.m arriving at Sky Harbor March 6th 2018 for a northbound thru hike .I'm renting a small pick up and shopping in Phoenix most of the day and heading down to Sierra Vista in the afternoon and getting the earliest shuttle I can to the terminus on the 7th. I have room for 1 or 2. Can always change for...

Re: Sleeping bag repair

Thanks guys I'm liking the velcro option more and more. probably lighter too. I think I will try contacting Thermarest to see what they would recommend., just in case.... Why not just use a sleeping bag for those times when it is too cold for a quilt? I use my sleeping bag like a quilt 90% of the ti...

Re: Sleeping bag repair

I have an idea I would like some help with if possible. Here goes..... I have a standard EE quilt and a Thermarest xtherm that I would like to mate together with velcro or zippers?? Is it possible ? Is there a glue out there that won't eat through the air pad and retain its strength enough to deal w...

Re: Cell Phone Service providers - Arizona Trail

@azbackpackr
Between guthooks app and kindle and camera I really rely (too much) on my phone. Definitely an option for more purist hikers who use that thingy with a needle that points north which hopefully will stay at the bottom of my pack;)

Re: Cell Phone Service providers - Arizona Trail

Couldn't you just buy a Verizon prepaid phone while you're in the US, and skip all that other stuff? Verizon phones plus 2 months coverage cost aprox $300 and may not work in your home country. I prefer to get a compatible phone at home with the camera and battery that I want . Plus I save about $1...

Re: Cell Phone Service providers

Thank you very much for the info. For any international hikers looking to add U.S. roaming that includes verizon you must have a 4g phone and according to the verizon person I just spent the last hour with, a carrier in your country that uses verizon as their U.S. provider. Canada has none they all ...

Re: Cold weather backpacking up North

@sajor75 Winter camping in Canada's a breeze with my Paria 15 degree quilt and my neo air x therm pad . I don't like my EE 20 degree quilt for anything below 30 degrees.Far to many cold spots. I also use a Eureka hike &bike double wall tent .Sheds snow nicely. For the money I am very impressed with...

Re: Best hiking shoes for flat feet

After suffering with deep blisters and plantar on my thru hike attempt I decided to to toss my Merrill's and try something different. After reading this thread I went to try on a pair of of the 3.5 Altra lone peak . I walked around the store getting used to the zero drop and after ten minutes I was ...

Re: Parking for 4 weeks in Superior

As last resort I would try the enterprise car rental in Superior .You may be able to work something out with them or the used car dealership next door( I met him and he seems quite reputable). You would have to "street view" the car dealership as I don't recall the name. Its about a 2 or 3 mile walk...

Re: Spring 2017 Thru Hikers

Last March when we arrived in Sierra Vista our shuttle bus driver informed us he couldn't drive the extra few miles up the hill to the staring point. He dropped us off at the park office .As we already had a late start 10am it was nearly noon by the time we got up there. Just a heads up for any slow...

Re: Whats up with Gaitors.?

I've never worn gaitors before and was hoping for some advice . I'll be hiking the northern half of the AZT and don't want a repeat of the first half of the trail. I know snow will be more of a factor but Im more worried about rocks sand etc. ( I think...)

Re: It's time for Wilderness quotas

From a tourist perspective I could see paying a one time yearly fee to hike all trails except of course the big 3
Having everyone pay once a year does seem to work well for other permit issues. .
