Not sure why this post was moved off the discussion about the fire - see this relevant piece: "Invasive buffelgrass may have helped Bighorn Fire take out saguaros - Saguaros, which usually don't burn, exploded into flames" - https://tucson.com/news/local/invasive-buffelgrass-may-have-helpe...

Re: Rincon Peak cairn destroyed
Hope they don't rebuild it - was blocking the 360 view and covering up a beautiful slab. A sign with historic photo would be nice and as someone mentioned might have prevented it being torn down if it was there to begin with. I learned relatively recently that Rincon peak was an important heliograph...

Sad there will be more Saguaros in Tucson burned/killed. This absolutely should not be at lower elevations but non natives grasses / cattle turned much of the catalina foothills into a prairie. 4th of july A Mountain fiasco and Mercer fire were two relatively recent examples around here. Pontatoc se...

Re: Sabino Canyon Recreation Area Shuttle
As a regular sabino tram road hobby jogger, I'll always remember the tram free months where long stretches of solitude were common even in the afternoon. I'm not sure how the vending machines survived - maybe they stocked kale chips? Checked the old tram lot this morning and its still empty but ther...

Your treks are awesome.
I'd like to learn how to climb as good as you and then do some out of the way stuff like the towers to the left of cathedral in this photo: [ photo ]

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought Linda Miller mentioned that it was the 80s but I'm sure that extended into the 90s as well.
One of the reasons I joined SAHC last year was to get a chance to talk to the members and ask questions about where they have or have not been.

Re: HAZ member imike, sad news
Sorry to hear. I enjoyed the NM canyoneering photos with that fun and adventurous group. After seeing the name "Michal Ja" on this thread, I recognized it as what would translate from Western Slavic to English as: Michael I (Nominative "I"). Its pronounced something like: "M...

Re: 26 "hikers" rescued from Sabino Canyon
When I saw the headlines of the recent Tanque Verde Falls incident I thought it was a odd to describe the 17 rescued as "hikers" because they just parked a car and scrambled down to go swimming. I bet if you asked half the people going to bear canyon if they are "hiking" they wou...

Charles Miles has some info and photos including from July 2nd from around Green Mountain showing the ridgeline by Mt. Guthrie on fire. http://hikelemmon.com/... Re: Stage II Fire Restrictions - Southern Arizona agencies
I'm serious here are my suggestions for the Tucson area when we reach Stage I because restrictions don't work:
Close Reddington road and offer free passes to indoor shooting ranges.
Would be cheaper and might avoid another Bullock fire.

@swingdance
I took a look at the route and its just the social trail that starts at lower green mountain/bug spring trailhead and goes through the picnic areas downstream. So many better options for hiking in that area and a mistake to name it "Bear Canyon Trail".

The recent Molino fire in the Catalina foothills was also said to be caused by recreational shooting. Not mentioned anywhere is the fact that both of these fires are in areas choked with African grasses planted for cattle. The experimental range studies warned that if you plant the african lovegrass...

Re: March was really busy for SARA
@SkyIslandHiker Its possible a combination of cairns, nightfall, and all that manzanita up there contributed. The SARA reports are so terse, they always leave me with more questions. I bet that stretch of Esperero from the window peak saddle is the least traveled and most overgrown trail segment in...

Re: Drones in the Wilderness
The forest service provides these "TIPS", among others here - http://www.fs.fed.us/s... Point 3 seems to imply people are using drones for hunting and fishing and I suppose shooting from drones, maybe even at night with a spotlight attachment, will be the new thing for poachers. Protect Wi...

Height of Light?
Hello, On my recent trek up to point 6237 via Ventana/Esperero traverse I saw broken pieces of wood and wires near the summit and thought it was some sort of assist but then HAZ member johnlp posted a photo from another photoset showing a 'Height of Light' structure from the 1940s. I can't seem to f...
