Sanity Check Update

The AT trial was a bust in late April so the final decision is still in flux. It was supposed to be 10 days but my daughter had enough at day 3, an R&R zero for day 4 was no help and she bugged out. Knees and precipitation-suck. I didn't do much better tapping out at day 5 with continued bad weather...

Water caching for non-resident visitors

Is there a network or system a visitor (not considering the luxury of a trail drive-through) can use to place water along the trail?

Re: Eating Cold or Hot?

This is a blog, that I stumbled across during my Appalachian Trail preparation, that confirms the ORD-M ground transport mailing of propane and she links to the postal service regulations.

Map legends and/or tutorials

For the map found here:

Where is the explanation for the colors of the section markers? If they correspond to temperature, is there a way to retrieve historical data for a projected plot for November?

Re: Altitude Sickness

@rcorfman I was going to try to follow up on her case to see if she got a diagnosis. I don't think there is much risk of my developing an EIB because I am assuming that would have showed up in triathlon competition. Sucking wind? Yes, but still able to recover on the move. Those events didn't invol...

Re: Altitude Sickness

Thanks, everyone, for straightening me out. I am still on the alert for that one, tiny but significant, show stopper that will torpedo this whole crazy idea and I thought this was approaching that. My refusal to fly, which obligates me to plan for 6 days of round-trip driving, is reducing my on-tria...

Altitude Sickness

REI has an "All Trails Connect" video about an attempt at breaking the MTB AZT thru-bike record but she got ill with what looked to me like altitude sickness. Has that ever been an issue for hikers from lower altitudes like, say, Fredericksburg Virgina (in the hundreds of feet elevation vice y'all b...

Re: Backpacking Etiquette During Hunting Season

@ssk44 I am not an AZ resident and I am currently siphoning info the best I can from the web. I have plans to backpack AZT starting mid-to-late October and thru November which I am pretty sure will involve a hunting season. I can't say, at this point, whether it will be a thru hike. Where do I go f...

General questions about rates and scheduling

Is there an "off season" for shuttle availability when they just won't be there?
Typical rate for Utah to the Mexico start (which I am guessing would be the worst case, price-wise)?
I haven't looked at bus schedules; anyone operate in AZ besides Greyhound/Trailways?

Thanks!
Peace!

Unsavory Question

Are there any "sensitive areas" #11 - 39 where one has to pack out their poop?

Re: Grand Canyon Access? Camping?

@cavarocI would be very interested in how that turns out. The most reliable thing about me is my unreliability so waiting a couple of days is fair reconciliation for me.
Peace!

Re: Sanity Check

@joe bartels What are the sections based on? I will have to poke around some more to find some sort of legend or explanation of the stats presented. Looks pretty comprehensive. It would be nice if the sections were elevation/difficulty corrected so as to estimate a day's travel. Thanks for the info...

Re: Sanity Check

@cavaroc Yeah, that helps a lot. I got impatient and got the Guthook AZT app. I used Guthook for iPhone for the Florida Trail for a shakedown in Ocala National Forest and it was great. I will be using it for a Shenandoah National Park section hike this Spring. Found a blogger, doing the AZT now, th...

Re: Sanity Check

@oldmanonthetrailLooking silly? I'm too far along to worry about that. Better silly than becoming a negative backpacking statistic. Where do I start browsing? Are there journals for this route? Will this route have a name? The AT & Florida Trails have mile markers, same for AZT?

Re: Sanity Check

@big_load This is just a vaporous idea. An alternative to starting at the Grand Canyon. Very likely to be a 2017 item. A "feature" of my job is the chronic inability to make plans due to schedules written in smoke that rely on a diminishing body pool. I have been around long enough to get nearly 7 ...

Sanity Check

Last year, in July, my daughter springs this idea during one of our rare phone calls. "What would you think about hiking the Appalachian Trail?". I thought it was pretty cool and asked her what brought that on. She said she knew I am a good planner and thought I could help by planning way in advance...
