Re: 2018 Fire Restrictions

@chumley Definition 2a, Merriam Webster: "the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning" -- A post on a national forest website says Saturday is "national get outdoors day," i.e., an invitation to get outdoors in the forest, ...

Re: Looking for an awesome day hike, regarding fire restrictions

I don't think Coronado Forest has closed the Mt Lemmon area, yet. I've had my eye on this one:
[ Mount Lemmon / Lemmon Rock Loop ]
Maybe I'll see you out there next week.

Re: 89%

@Jim_H
I bet there's a confidence interval of 1-2%, so your O2 may have been as high as 91%, even if the phone is "accurate." Devices used in medical practices usually have that kind of "plus or minus" range to them.

Re: Tinder Fire

@Ampaz Hope all your exams went well. Just now I looked again at the Tinder Fire map, here: http://nifc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=750acd60cd9e466fadbc501df5b4bf1d And I noticed the forest closure has been pulled back away from the Rim Road, and a southern perimeter of the fire seem...

Re: Tinder Fire

@Jim_H
Thanks - I drove through the burn area last summer, on FR420, from Schultz Tank to the Lockett Meadow Rd. It still looked much the same as your photoset. There was an area dotted with those white plastic cones, with seedlings. Guess people are still planting a few at a time.

Re: Tinder Fire

https://www.outsideonline.com/2298241/some-forests-arent-returning-after-wildfire And another thing to cheer up your day -- apparently people have found that burned areas don't regenerate trees the way they used to, due to climate change. Areas that have burned in the past 20 years or so are especia...

Re: Tinder Fire

@pixelfrog
Yeah, well it's not like there's a shortage of water at Kinder Crossing, which they could have used to put out their fire, even if they did not know there were restrictions in place. No good excuse for leaving the fire burning, or smoldering, imo.

Re: Tinder Fire

@Ampaz If you'd rather avoid the Rim area altogether, I'd suggest looking at azbackpackr's April 19, 2018 triplog for "Kelsey and Little LO" - https://hikearizona.com/x.php?I=4&ZTN=740&UID=0 - I don't know how I'd stretch that to 4 days, but if you look at the triplog and a map yo...

Re: Tinder Fire

@Ampaz
I'd also visit the Forest Service office in Payson on the way there, to let them know my plan, just in case the wind direction changes or some other thing happens. It seems like it would be a good idea to let them know you're in the vicinity.

Re: Tinder Fire

@Ampaz If I were going up there, I'd start at Tonto Fish Hatchery and hike the Babe Haught Trail up to Knoll Lake. Campsites are along the SE side of the lake, according to triplogs on HAZ. (Leaving the car below the Rim means you wouldn't have to worry about exactly where FR300 is closed.) Using t...

Re: 2018 Fire Restrictions

@kelly14 Pretty sure a propane stove, if it can be turned OFF, in the back of the truck would be allowed even after May 4th, but you have to make sure to park the vehicle where there is absolutely NO vegetation under it, so heat from the car parts won't start a fire, and NO vegetation above it wher...

Re: Tinder Fire

@Dschur
Glad your cabin appears to be standing - hoping for the best, re APS getting you up and no smoke damage.
Yes, the ranger did mention a section of the AZT is closed but I did not ask for detail on that. Hope everyone is able to work out a plan B.

Re: Tinder Fire

I just spoke to the Mogollon Ranger District Ranger (Linda), and she says the Cabin Loop area has not been burned, but the trails there are closed for now, they just don't want anybody in that area. FR300 (Rim Road) is closed for some ways west and east of the fire fighting area, as shown on the inc...

Re: Tinder Fire

@azbackpackr
Yeah, I had been planning to backpack Tonto Hatchery to Knoll and then over to Horton Springs Trail -- that's why I'm wondering about whether Forest is closed to the Rim, south of the fire. Will call Forest Service later to inquire, if the info doesn't come from someone here.

Re: Tinder Fire

@azbackpackr Yeah, NPR had that snow news this morning -- congrats on getting snow cover in May! Here it's in low 60s, with forecast high of 75! Amazing. Tinder fire area got some moisture, too, but this morning the map is showing some tendrils to the south. Wondering whether Cabin Loop has been/wi...

Re: Tinder Fire

@trekkin_gecko The map referred to in trekkin_gecko's post shows a yellow "closure" area extending all the way to the Rim. But the Forest Service closure order's map does not go that far south. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd578204.pdf Does anyone know whether the fo...

Thanks for that news -- I've been obsessively checking the weather in a few places today, hoping there would be rain in the burn area on the Rim.

FYI, there is a Forum Topic set aside just for AZTrail questions/info -- you might get more replies to your questions there. Here's a link:

(I'm not an AZT hiker yet, so won't try to address your post beyond that.)
