AZT and solar panels vs. battery bank alone
Hola HAZzers, More last minute prep for AZT. Last Grand Canyon backpack trip I saw a guy with a Renogy 5W single panel (6oz?) on the top of his pack, which he said was enough to recharge his GPS, iphone, and some other USB appliance, while he was walking. He had it hooked to an Anker battery bank. I...

Hi Ultra,
the app reading of comments at each pinpoint is a great idea--will that to the reading list.

@CannondaleKid
Hi CK,
thanks for all that--very informative! I am planning on hiking tomorrow with Anker 15w solar panel on top of pack to get some idea how well it charges while in constant movement--report to follow.

Re: Last minute gear questions:
Me again--everyone, thanks so much for all of your input. A few remaining questions, apologies for redundancy: How common is it to not bring GPS, only guthook app and paper maps/compass? Is anyone bringing a solar panel??? or is that negated by battery banks and recharging every 5-7days at resupply ...

Re: Last minute gear questions:
@ultrazona Hi ultra, thanks so much for your tips, especially plinking out from the trail! I will check out the sockwa. I think I will test out reading on Kindle app, and see if I go crosseyed, and look at battery consumption compared to Kindle. I will look for 7micron felt filter bag. From your 's...

Hi Rcorf,
thanks for your sage advice. I don't have to deal much with rodentia in AK, so it is good to get some local knowledge. I was thinking the same thing re: (rain jacket, warmer bag), erring on the side of caution, but just wanted to make sure I'm not overdoing things.

Re: Last minute gear questions:
@KwaiChang Hi Kwai, I have a 15Kmah Anker battery bank--I was planning on recharging with that, if need be. In civilization, I can read the Kindle paperwhite for 7-10 days between charges, probably longer if I dim down the brightness, so maybe I would recharge it only when re-supplying. I thought a...

Re: NOBO hike late april
@desertadapted Hi DA, thanks for your input. I plan on buying Guthook today. I wasn't sure how the water reports are updated on it after you have downloaded it and when you are on the trail???--I'm imagining that would require a cell signal. Any idea what cell coverage would be from Maztazal-Pine? ...

Last minute gear questions:
Hola HAZzers, In about 5 days, I am doing a 2-3 week stretch of AZT, yet to be determined (which means I will probably figure it out on plane), something between passages 18-31. I have been reading the varied forums here, and some gear lists, the majority of which are for PCT, only a few for AZT, as...

Hi Sandy & Rcorf,
Thanks so much for your input--very helpful. The flora option looks like a winner. I'm excited to leave 3 ft of snow and hit the trail soon.

Re: NOBO hike late april
@sandyfortner Hi Sandy, I've got about 2 weeks and will be starting about April 1. I know that is later than most for leaving from the border, and I am worried about heat even on April 1, so I am considering starting a little further north. If you had 2 weeks to hike the most scenic section of AZT ...

@Hippy
Thanks for update--surprising! I saw a low of 8 yesterday...I'm wondering if any weather is hitting you today... I'm hiking in shorts regardless. Haven't worked out transportation logistics yet, but thanks for offer.

Re: Ideas for backpack December - Jan; GC loop recommendation
@hikeaz --Great info, with water spots to boot! I saw your earlier post with mileage, and some of it was not lining up with the map on this site where trails were not connecting--I knew something seemed off so it was better to ask. This looks like the perfect loop, as long as my lucky thumb gets me...

Re: Ideas for backpack December - Jan; GC loop recommendation
Everyone, thanks for your feedback--this is an awesome site. Superstitionguy--I'll be driving a rental car, so I guess that's like a high clearance vehicle :)--maybe that will limit some Superstition options. Hikeaz, I like your idea on Tanner-S Kaibab and the tip on the sun. Maybe it is the map I'm...

Ideas for backpack December - Jan; GC loop recommendation
Greetings HAers, Noob to this forum. I have one month in AZ from Dec 15 - Jan 15 visiting family in Tucson and getting out for a few trips. I am looking at doing one 5 day backpack and one at least 3-4 day trip. I would prefer to not camp in snow, given that I am trying to leave that behind here in ...
