Re: Outdoor gear stores that have closed.
@LindaAnn That's exactly HOW they survive. It's sort of the dollar general approach; focus on smaller towns/poorer markets that will buy the low quality stuff because that's what they can afford/it's the only option (IE, Payson [for big 5, specifically, not the DG comparison). In larger metros like...

Re: Outdoor gear stores that have closed.
@LosDosSloFolks I would assume that's net vs gross and, assuming that's correct, that actually is a pretty high profit margin by most people's standards. I would expect gross to be 3-4x of that typically. @chumley I think I've mentioned before that I work in supply chain software. It's public that ...

Re: Outdoor gear stores that have closed.
That's interesting; I would've thought guns would have a decent margin on them, too. Most people, even gun people, aren't buying a new one every 6 months or even 2 years, really, so you're not getting a ton of repeat buyers like with clothing. I own a couple but I think it's been 9-10 years since I ...

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
Looks like my house got absolutely drenched compared to other areas of the valley last night; a bit over an inch where I'm seeing less the .25 in most the rest of the valley. Seems pretty consistent that this area (near deer valley/cave creek) always gets a lot more than other areas for whatever rea...

Nearly 1.5" at my place near Cave Creek/Deer Valley crossroads. It was glorious except for the morning run with approximately 82405% humidity.

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
@outdoor_lover I purchased a place in Geronimo Estates a few years back and the well the previous owners was around ~200 feet (they drilled that in 2002). It had dried up a couple of years before I purchased. Previous owners had always had a 500 gallon cistern that the well pumped into and then add...

I've been a technology professional for the last 25 years and you guys just made me realize that, unless I dig up some buried laptop in my garage, I actually have nothing that takes a CD in my house except for my playstation these days. Even my cars don't have CD players. How times change...!

Bias statement: I used to be an engineer who worked for Garmin I don't particularly like how Garmin has done various things in the space and how they completely neglected their InReach division for so long (weird how a competitor comes out with something cheaper, lighter, and better and they suddenl...

Re: Does anyone have routes for 2 to 3 days in the Chiricahuas or Black River area?
Knock out some AZT? If you have a group, should be easy enough to set up a shuttle to do something in the Mazzies (it'll be chillier but probably not too bad) or something like passages 16/17; add something on either side if you want more miles/days. Tons of great stuff in the supes, too, and backpa...

Re: Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim, lost to fire
@corwinwilkins IBC type totes can certainly be used to store liquid chlorine. Unlike propane, it has a pretty short shelf life and is constantly degrading and degrades pretty fast, so there is more of an emphasis on portability/replacement than something like propane that doesn't really degrade. Du...

Re: Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim, lost to fire
Look. I understand why we wouldn't these things in a park but if there was ever a roller coaster or zipline that went from the top of the rim to the bottom, I'd be first in line. I'd just want it separated from the other stuff and not visible.azbackpackr wrote: water park, zip lines, gondola, roller coaster,

Re: Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim, lost to fire
Right, and I looked at those and didn't see anything preventing natural fires from burning so I was curious if I was missing a subsection/amendment/etc. Originally, that was an unofficial policy but that all changed with the leopold report is my understanding, which is why I was looking for a real c...

Re: Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim, lost to fire
contrary to law “confine and contain” is an unauthorized strategy. Can you provide a citation? I'm 100% sure this isn't true in certain NPS parks but I'm not certain if those are policies that were implemented as exceptions (IE, Yellowstone). When I skim the cores in the NPS organic act, I don't se...

Re: Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim, lost to fire
@chumley That's the honest failure here. Fully get them trying to take advantage of a natural fire to get rid of some undergrowth but some winds were predicted. Seems someone/some people just didn't get how strong the winds were going to get. And, to give Jim a little credit, I'll be interested to ...
