Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

@wallyfrack Not the preference but a nice option to have if I were to go there and find something closed. I haven't been out there before; when you did this, was there somewhere you could leave your car for a few days? edit: nevermind. pulled it up on google maps and looks like there is a parking a...

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

@joebartels Yeh, I saw that, too, but it's a bit of a drive for me so I'd prefer something more than, "a friend told me something" :D Now that things are cooling off a bit, trying to plan on some nice eastern supe backpacking trips as I haven't explored out there... Not sure if my subaru can make t...

Re: SR 88 - Apache Trail

I see that someone made a comment here a while ago that it was open from the East to the northern Reavis trailhead but when I go to the 511 site, it makes it look like it's closed a bit farther East than that. Can anyone confirm that they've seen if it's actually open to the point you could get to t...

Re: REI Mountain House Fail

@rustyshackleford135
It is. One suggestion: they come with actual full on biscuits vs being crumbled up already. Break up the biscuits before rehydrating and it's much better; they don't really seem to rehydrate well if left whole.

Re: REI Mountain House Fail

@chumley It really isn’t; peak isn’t doing anything new from a technique perspective. “Fresh” doesn’t matter for their meals at the quantity they’re selling (if you eat it 3 years later, there may be a small drop in quality but they don’t sell/make enough for you to buy something that is that age a...

Re: New forest thinning contract awarded

@hikeaz
Everyone talks about corruption at the really high levels of government but corruption and nepotism are ridiculously more common at these lower levels. Awarding a contract to your ex-USFS mate with no real experience? Sure, what could go wrong.

@khemmers
As of earlier this year, back in April or so, it was still fine for any SUV really, in my opinion, and probably with most passenger cars as well (assuming no inclement weather)

Re: Tent pole repair

I'm generally a trekking pole tent guy but now you have me wondering about my two car camping tents that haven't been used in a year... Guess I'll be setting those up in the yard this weekend just to make sure they're okay!

Re: Tent pole repair

@tibber It’s pretty easy to replace the shock cord and is probably be willing to do it for you if you supplied the cord. I’d say I’d be really disappointed in having to do it after 10 nights as well; how long ago did you purchase it? Do you store in a garage/outdoors? I wouldn’t expect to have to r...

White Tanks - Backcountry camping?

So i went down some random rabbit hole and ran into a couple of sources that mentioned that you could get free backcountry camping permits in the White Tanks. This has me a little intrigued as it would represent the shortest drive to a "winter" backpacking trip I could do by far, and something that ...

@Watauga Curious as to what you’re doing? I’m pretty convinced up going to the gila this weekend. I actually haven’t made my way down to the rincons so always looking for more info/what people are doing especially since I’m thinking about down there in a couple of weeks Let me know if you wanna tag...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

@Canyonram I do and I have and I spent several years in Iraq and Afghanistan where I frequently had to run around in MOPP4, which is waaaaaaay hotter than what they're doing here. It absolutely sucked and I got paid less than they do. Money isn't the only motivating factor. One big difference? I ha...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

I can speculate on any number of other factors that could contribute to these outcomes. But I won't. I will because this is fun: they're overweight/out of shape/drank too much the night before/didn't drink enough water. The first two could be wrong because exhaustion can be caused by many factors, ...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

@friendofThundergod I like this idea in principle but it introduces a cost element (have to pay someone to check ID or whatever because otherwise it's "honor system" that won't work) that I'm not really a fan of; the state parks already have that logistical element of someone collecting fees. I sup...

Re: Union wants to close some trails because "ermagherd so warm"

I dunno, I'm pretty much the opposite of "good shape" (just check out some of my trip reports) and I've done a couple of backpacking trips in the supes this summer at around 108 degrees and "enjoyed it". I appreciated that I was able to enjoy the public lands that my tax dollars go towards and is on...

Re: Rincons and Weather

I have a trip "planned" for the Gila wilderness this weekend and am running into the same thing. With the normal monsoonal weather + hurricane nora, my guess is it's going to be rainy but hard to tell until closer to the trip date. I'm looking at potential alternates in southern utah and will likely...

Re: Bryce Canyon Under the Rim - Worth the drive?

@big_load Oh I get you; it's more that I always have things on the list so could push this to some other time (and backpack elsewhere) when the shuttle is running if people said things like "the southern part is the best by far, you don't want to miss it". Honestly, my in-laws live in SLC and we dr...

Re: Bryce Canyon Under the Rim - Worth the drive?

@jacobemerick Perfect, thanks for the feedback. My tentative plan was to drive up and hike a few miles down to one of the Yellow Creek sites and then hike out to around Natural bridge the next day before and either camping at the site near there (if I want to carry water from Swamp Canyon, which se...

Bryce Canyon Under the Rim - Worth the drive?

I've had the under the rim trail on my list to do for a little while and was thinking about doing it next weekend during the long weekend. It's a holiday weekend but most things I'm reading have most people saying they see a small handful of people on the whole thing so hoping it wouldn't be too cra...
