Re: NPS entrance fees increase for nonresidents

@Jim Interesting. When I got my lifetime military pass, I had to provide my service information and it validated that info. Curious at how someone gets around that unless they're just straight up using someone else's info. Happy to have the digital option now, though (although, looks like that's no...

@Alston_Neal
I knew I had crossed into solid mid-life when that kept getting recommended to me. I clearly would pause, read a bit, and move on and facebook knew exactly what was going on

Re: Take out your insoles?

Feet are funny business; everyone is absolutely different. My feet are flatter than my countertop and wide as hell. When I joined the military, they have 3 boxes with the latin names for flat, normal, high arch. The doc doing mine literally created a new box with his own narrative on how flat mine w...

Re: Why does catclaw claw?

There's thinking that it might be leftover from a previous time where megafauna existed that would walk past it, get caught up in it, and shake/mess up the shrub which would disturb the seeds and masticate them a bit, which those seeds need to germinate.

Re: Carr Canyon Road

In July, it was okay enough (still a little rough, but something any 2wd/clearance vehicle could do and almost seemed like it had been graded in the last year) with the exception of two giant potholes that stand out in my memory. One of them was tricky, the other not so much but requires clearance. ...

Highest rain day in Phoenix in 7 years apparently and took us from the 2nd or 3rd driest year ever to 'average'. Like said above though, not the most useful way to get it. Got 1.8" at my house

@LosDosSloFolks I'm not quite as far north of you but similar; thunder and lightning all night long. Haven't seen something like that here but maybe once since I've been here. Ironically, my dog didn't care (and he's a little baby) but my daughter who normally sleeps through everything got scared a...

Re: Atmosphere Comparison

Well that was a fun night. Over an inch here and a friend sent this from their house. Heard a boom, and bam... tree on fire. FD responded quickly, apparently, but had to come back out an hour later as it had reignited.

Re: Hiking Vehicle Tires

One of the benefits of the KO3s is that they're a lot quieter than the KO2s. The KO2s annoyed me with that on a previous vehicle. I'll probably be switching to the KO3s on the new 4runner when it's time

@azbackpackr I did my first bikepacking trip out there a few years back based on a recommendation from someone here! It was fun! Re: Atmosphere Comparison

Those lows really help mentally, if nothing else. I walk my daughter to school most days and last year was absolutely horrible but this year, not so bad. My wife runs 5-8 miles most mornings and was able to wake up later this year to get it done while being comfortableish. I'd probably murder most h...

because Kingman, Yuma, Bullhead and Parker are actually part of California, dontcha know. Odd, I always thought they were in some weird black hole separated from the rest of the world completely, if I'm being honest. That could be why they got more weather than the rest of us... just how alternate ...

Re: Outdoor gear stores that have closed.

@LindaAnn That's exactly HOW they survive. It's sort of the dollar general approach; focus on smaller towns/poorer markets that will buy the low quality stuff because that's what they can afford/it's the only option (IE, Payson [for big 5, specifically, not the DG comparison). In larger metros like...

Re: Outdoor gear stores that have closed.

@LosDosSloFolks I would assume that's net vs gross and, assuming that's correct, that actually is a pretty high profit margin by most people's standards. I would expect gross to be 3-4x of that typically. @chumley I think I've mentioned before that I work in supply chain software. It's public that ...

That's interesting; I would've thought guns would have a decent margin on them, too. Most people, even gun people, aren't buying a new one every 6 months or even 2 years, really, so you're not getting a ton of repeat buyers like with clothing. I own a couple but I think it's been 9-10 years since I ...

Re: Atmosphere Comparison

Looks like my house got absolutely drenched compared to other areas of the valley last night; a bit over an inch where I'm seeing less the .25 in most the rest of the valley. Seems pretty consistent that this area (near deer valley/cave creek) always gets a lot more than other areas for whatever rea...
