Don't forget to look to the west of Phoenix. There are some great hikes in the White Tank Mountains. A combination of Goat Camp Trail and Willow Springs will give you an excellent workout and a variety of terrain. It is a little longer drive to the trail head, but Quartz Mountain (also on the west s...

azhiker96 is correct about the North Rim being closed in November. It is open from mid-May to Mid-October weather permiiting. I have a couple of conflicts the end of September but, depending on the date you pick, I am definitely interested in joining you. I hiked from the North Rim to the South Rim ...

What is the dinner like? I can't believe we will have to wait until 7 p.m. to get it. Hope it is worth it! The 7:00 PM meal is the stew meal and I think you will find it more than worth the wait. We think it is outstanding. They will assign you to a table and then the meal is served family style - ...

 I have stayed in the dorms at Phantom Ranch on 3 different occasions and have never seen or heard a mouse. Nor have I had anyone else comment/complain about mice. There may be some in the camp ground but I don't think there are any in the dorms. They do not have metal cans, but, as MaryPhyl st...

What time of day did you start and what time would you start if you hiked it again? azhiker96: We left Phoenix at 7:30 in the morning. Our plan was to get to the Grand Canyon around noon, have a bite to eat, take a nap, and then start hiking at 5:00 pm. But, having had a big breakfast at Camp Verde...

My question ultimately is this: how hard is it to hike from the North Rim to Phantom Ranch in a day without heavy backpacking stuff? Dianne, we just returned from a Rim to Rim to Rim. We started at the South Rim carrying camelbaks that weighed about 17 pounds before we added water. It took us a lit...

8) DB Rice, who is also a member of HikeArizona; John Mumma, a friend from Puerto Rica; and myself hiked from the South Rim to the North Rim and back to the South Rim in less than 24 hours April 26 - 27. Hiked a total distance of 45 miles with over 20,000 feet in elevation change. DB took 21:50, Joh...

Hiked the Trail the day after it opened and I experienced nothing like what Dustwatcher describes. There was one person at the office/trailhead. Saw no other authority type figures, hired or volunteer. The trail did have gravel but it was a far cry from what you would find in someone's yard. My hiki...

Excellent timing on this post. For the past two weeks, I have been looking semi-seriously into the purchase of a GPS. I have about decided on the Garman Etrex, a Lowrance iFinder, or a Magellan Meridian. Have heard from Nighthiker on the Garman. Does anyone have any info/experience with the last two?
