HWY 288 and FR 410 to Reynolds Creek

Post by winotron »

Thinking of taking a trip to Reynolds Creek this Sunday. Rain is forecast for most of the weekend, possibly dry on Sunday. I've never been to the area, so I was wondering how the roads might be after a rain. I don't have 4WD, but do have a high clearance truck.

I think you should be fine. The road has a nice gravel base to it as you get into the canyon. In the beginning there are a couple of minor dips that hold water. I have always done it in 2wd even in rain. Worse case, which I doubt will be a problem, is still Workman Falls as a backup.

No problems. Most of 288 is paved now, the rest is well graded sedan-accessible dirt.

410 should be fine with high clearance even when wet.

I did that trip in the snow once, with a rental car. It wasn't too bad.

The only issue I ever had on FR 410 was when a tree fell during high winds which would have prevented me getting back out to AZ 288 if I had not brought a hand saw. To this day I still wonder what prompted me to take it at the last moment because I had never taken a saw before... but I have ever since.

Not being a full-length hand saw, it took me a good hour to cut twice through the two-foot diameter tree then use a rope hooked to the car (at that time a Honda CR-V) to pull it far enough to pass through.

i think of that experience every time we are up that way.
