MyTopo / Outdoor Navigator

Post by sventre »

Received email notifying me that the Outdoor Navigator app and the companion website were being DISCONTINUED at end of year. No plans to re-implement the services. Bummer! I like using the PC desktop to plan trips and transfer to smartphone for realtime use while hiking. Looked at replacement called ViewRanger (European centered, but has USA maps) and also use BCNAV; but neither has the same functionality and ease of use. I still have TOPO! and use it even though Nat Geo ended that support years ago. Any suggestions for a practical desktop/smartphone (android) replacement to the MyTopo products? THX

I used Topo! for years, and it simply refuses to run on my new computer (it hasn't been supported for a while now). 99% of what I need is now easily accomplished in Route Editor. I don't ever carry my Garmin anymore. Maps and tracks all go right on my iPhone.

The one thing I occasionally miss from Topo! is the ability to print paper maps, which Route Editor doesn't do easily.

From time to time, I'll use Google Earth for something but will always go back to Route Editor. One of the greatest things about RE is the ability to import/export in pretty much all the common formats (GPX and KML primarily).

I have been using Backcountry Navigator Pro for years now as my go-to GPS app. We have even been able to use those data in published papers ( https://peerj.com/articles/905/#materials|methods ). I never used a Topo! app though so I can't directly compare.

@Rob del Desierto
That's just an app for a mobile device, right? (As opposed to PC desktop map and GPS editing software)...

As far as I know. There are some free GIS software packages out there but honestly for pretty much my needs using the HAZ map editor is sufficient.

I'm way behind the times on most everything. I have the old National Geo series for most of the states I want. I print my maps at home but I have it also loaded on a small laptop that I take with me. I also have a portable printer so I have a bag for all of it and I can print maps in the field if need be. I don't use a GPS so that doesn't matter to me, nor do I like looking at most anything on my smart phone, too small. Some of the old series can be had on ebay or amazon at some amazing expense--
