Tule TH Hammock Camping?

Post by knmurphy »

So I'm planning a big backpack trip in the Supes and am getting dropped off at the Tule TH at night and will be camping there. I'm only bringing a hammock which will work for the rest of the trip, I'm good at finding a hang when it doesn't seem likely. Does anyone have any experience trying to use a hammock in this area?

Thanks in advance.

As I recall, there are only isolated trees right near the TH. If you walk in a bit and turn up Tule Canyon there are some trees, but they're pretty far off trail, pretty far from the TH, and I don't know if they're suitable for hanging. Another possible spot is at the fenceline where the trail crosses Tule Canyon. The problem there is that I remember the trees being on the ranch side of the fence and right next to the tank. I would check satellite views, since it's been 13-14 years since I was there.

@big_load Thanks for the info. Think I'll start looking through photo sets and see if I spot something.

I really like that hike, by the way. The up and down on the first day is a killer, but it's got all the solitude and scenery you could want.

Sounds great, the plan for day 1 is to hike in to Reavis and ultimately exit at First water. I'm looking forward to hiking the Tule and Two Bar Ridge trails for the first time.

@hikeaz Nice! I can work with that. I'm assuming that is the corral 1 mile in.

Thanks

use at your own risk
- probably doesn't smell good in the vicinity
- it's out of the wilderness and withdrawals of not being in a wilderness may ensue
- the secret elitist society might have ulcers if you share the location
- the windmill may be noisy

the tank and fencing look different though...

The two picture and google pic are two different spots, I am familiar with both. I don't know about the smell, noisy windmill, or lack of wilderness, but my biggest concern would be the fact that its a pretty active ranching area, which was confirmed by the fact that there was a vehicle in sat. photo. I can't imagine it being too much of an issue, but you will be ultimately sleeping on someone's corral and might wake up to some workers and cows this time of year...The rancher's first name is Brandon though, and you could tell him you know the guy with two white dogs, but I am not sure how far that will get you

Kurt's location is definitely the same as in the photo. Joe's just trying to keep you from finding his secret wilderness stash by sending you in the wrong direction to some stinky cattle tank! (No permit required! ;) )

FWIW, the wash immediately adjacent to the trailhead looks to have a few sections of trees large enough to hang from based on shadows from the satellite photo. If you're good at finding a hang where it doesn't seem likely, you might do fine right there!

ah yes this is it https://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=572874

the road leading to the tank shocking had a bunch of desert willow and Arizona Walnut
which I suspect was planted as walnut does not typically grow that low in elevation

@chumley
Oh I stand corrected, I was thinking pic. was the corral on road on way in, left side...oops!

That being said, prob. looking for a tree near TH, or that wash would work better anyways, but that corral did have running water I want to say feeding a trough, so that could be nice..

Thanks so much for all the info everyone, I love what a resource this community is. thankfully I've convinced my ride that camping at the TH and driving home in the morning is better for him than driving back at night, well... better for me at least. So now I can bring some ground gear and send it back.

Thanks again everyone, I shutter at the idea of wilderness withdrawals.

@hikeaz Exactly, excellent translation. Not sure how people sleep on the ground without it.
