Start Southern Terminus

Post by regenerator »

Planning to take a quick trip down and back to Mexican border day before starting the hike. Am I correct that shuttles from Sierra Vista won’t go any further than Coronado Park Visitor center. After that to get to the trail, hike down and back to the border is something like 8 miles return trip (ending back at Visitor Center)

Yes, you can drive to the parking lot, where the shuttle will drop you. From the parking lot to the border - downhill - is 1.9 miles. Then it's 1.9 miles back up to parking lot - so less than 4 miles round trip. Then head up Miller to Utah!!

The Visitor Center is not at the Montezuma Pass parking lot where most hikers begin. Hiking from the VC is about 3 miles (one way) and 1500 feet of gain via Joe’s Canyon Trail to the AZT junction and an extra mile down to the border. So an out n back from the visitor center would be about 8 miles.

The next day you’d have to hike Joe’s Canyon trail again to get to the AZT junction to start heading north.
