Reavis Ranch Info

Post by markc63 »

I'm planning an outing to Reavis Ranch/Circlestone in a few weeks. Can anyone tell me if the trail from 109north is mountain bike freindly? Looking to see if "hike-a-bike" is an option. Thanks in advance.

You could ride forest road 212 from SR-88 to the trailhead, however you can't ride trail 109. Mountain biking isn't allowed inside federal wilderness areas. Trail 109 begins at the wilderness boundary.

Yup, Mike's right. No MTBs in the wilderness. It is tempting though... the 109 trail is the old roadbed into the ranch so it rarely exceeds a 6% grade. It would make a great ride but I wouldn't do it.

OK thanks all for the info. My guess is that this is an overnight hike. Or is it?

It could be done as a dayhike, but be a pretty long one.

Some time ago I plotted a trip to circlestone from all trailheads. Nothing was within my day range. 14-16 low grade miles is all I can hack.

Possibly in 70 degree weather but not in the middle of summer.

Reason: fixed a 16 year old grammar mistake, HAZ should run much smoother now

Yup. Hiking into Reavis from either side and up to Circlestone and then back out again in a day, even in cool temps, falls pretty close to death march status. I suppose it can be done but it'd be more of a fitness hike than an enjoyable experience. Besides, both the ranch area and Circlestone are neat areas that deserve more than a rest stop.

I've often thought that Teva's first backpack trip should be into Reavis and Circlestone. Waddya say, Joe?

Can not ride a bike there these days but before it was a WA, I rode from Tortilla Flat to the ranch and return. Best was Fish Creek hill. Also, another time we carted bee hives, with bees, to the ranch. Left them on supports on trees on the west side. Came back a few months later and got quite a bit of Reevis honey to bring back.

@The_Eagle

What!?l You've told many great stories, but none involve bike riding into wilderness areas before 1964!! :)

iirc, Joe's first backpack was into peterson ranch (also apples) back in the day. man, it's been years! i never really thought he'd start out with a 1.5 lb tarptent and a 15° marmot down bag but he went big and got the right stuff. second BP was kendrick with the gang, correct?
