Arizona Statewide Curfew

Post by DixieFlyer »

Let's see, we now have 110+ degree temperatures in the Valley, so many of us who hike, bike, etc are doing so early in the morning or in the evening. Unfortunately, our authoritarian governor has now dictated that, with few exceptions, we cannot be outside of our residences after 8:00 PM or before 5:00 AM. Amazingly, this edict is statewide.

It looks like we will soon be in a perpetual state of martial law.

wildwesthikes wrote:Hiking & the outdoors is to me an expression of freedom. Sounds cheesy - true. I don't like this idea that it's occasionally a negotiable that will have to be given up for however long this one guy that got elected to state office is telling us we need to, because of the crimes of a few. That is the problem I have.
And here's where I have a problem. At no time, not even now, has anyone told you that hiking and the outdoors was totally off limits. Even with the Stay at Home Order, the Outdoors was considered Essential. Even now, you're simply being asked to stay off the streets between 8 pm and 5 am. Last I looked, that still gives you 11 hours for your outdoor activities. The Outdoors still isn't banned. No one has told you once, since all this started, way back in February, that you can't hike. But according to you....
And just like that, your democracy died.
All because they don't want you out until after 5 am and you need to be home by 8 pm. For.one.week...... I'm surprised you thought we were still in a democracy after they passed a seat belt law. And yes, everyone has hardships, some more than others. You've lost family and I'm very sorry about that. You haven't seen family and I'm very sorry about that too.

I'm exactly the opposite. My Sister, whom I live with, is in Acute Kidney Failure and can barely breathe. It's taking weeks upon weeks for doctor appts and tests and it's still ongoing. They don't know what's going on yet. So there's that, but it's just the latest of stuff being stacked on. I'm trying to keep my 90 year old mother alive and well and having a lot of problems trying to accomplish that. And all I need is for some random person who doesn't believe that they should be told what to do, to be a cashier at a Supermarket, or the guy that goes to the Salt River on Memorial Day sneezing in the aisle at Costco just seconds before I get the Toilet Paper in that aisle. I've sacrificed and given up a lot of my Freedoms for almost 2 years so my mother can stay in her home of 54 years. Until this last January, that also included anything outdoors. And just one person can undo it all and not only contribute to my mother's death, but also to my sister's and my own. This whole household could be wiped out by one person. So yeah, when I hear people complaining about their rights being trampled, and blowing things out of proportion, I just want to fight. And I'm not fighting for my rights. I'm simply fighting for 3 lives and honestly, it's pretty damn lonely on this side of the tracks.

The town, that I not only live in, but also was born in and grew up in, came under attack last night and I feared for it. I feared that Old Scottsdale would burn. And it still might. With all those old buildings, it wouldn't take much. I only live 1 1/2 miles from there. But today, people are complaining about not being able to be on the street before 5 am so they can hike. There is a long-time HAZer whose shop is right in the heart of Scottsdale where things were breaking loose last night. He's been at that location for years. Instead of wondering where you're going to hike tomorrow, maybe think about what he's going to be doing tonight. A lot of those shop owners will be in their shops, trying to protect them.

Yeah, well, asking doesn't seem to work. How many people have been "asked" to wear a Mask especially indoors? I can tell you that 75% of the people in my normal Grocery Store are not. How many people have been asked to not write or etch things into trees and rocks? How's that working for ya? And that's now an Order. Still doesn't work. Nothing does. People will do whatever people want to do. Period. Whether they're asked or they're ordered. The only reason they issue orders anymore, is just in the hopes that maybe a few more people will do what they were asking them to do in the first place.

My brother is in LE, he doesn't even have the time to make traffic stops, let alone bust people for curfew violations. My guess it's nothing to worry about unless you are slowly driving through downtown Phoenix or Tucson with no particular place to go. It will be selectively enforced.

Would anyone here feel differently if there were 2,000 people hiking your favorite trail, each with a pack of matches, striking them and tossing them every 10 feet, at 10pm tonight? Would you want some action from the legal authority? And need the National Guard to control them? The Governor just put this tool in action.

Stop fearing your morning hike. Most here are too young to remember the Watts Riots, Detroit Riots, …. we are near that again to repeat history.

Wow anyone want to help protect my biz that has been shut down for 2 months? A lot of armchair whining going on. We almost lost our biz which would then mean our house and now this effing thing on our biz after all this. No effing income for 2 months and no help, but this is all you "hikers" are having a problem with? Only one person has offered to help us tonight and I love her.

Checked in with my brother. Out here in suburban/rural Pima county the sheriff's department isn't pulling anyone over. All they are worried about is the safety of their officers and their families. The department lets deputies drive their vehicles home when off duty and they are afraid that an unattended police vehicle in someone's driveway might be an attractive target. Sheriff's deputies are pretty much doing safety checks on other officers houses all night.

If you appear to be going somewhere and not driving sketchily there are no worries. The curfew is really meant for the downtown areas of Phoenix & Tucson.

@outdoor_lover
I admit to some hyperbole in order to generate discussion, and it worked but also kind of backfired.
Never thought for a second that there were going to be goose stepping armies checking for papers on your way to a trailhead, that's not really what I was on about. It was more about the messaging, some of the wording was problematic to me. And how he said local leaders had provided input on it when they actually hadn't (it would seem). All kind of an academic exercise from my point of view as I'm not really hiking or out traveling during those hours anyway. The people saying we are armchair complaining kind of missed the point (at least the one I was trying to make, I agree some were just complaining).
It seems we're both dealing pretty tough family situations of late and I have a lot of sympathy for the fact that not only is that a difficult situation but it also resulted in you not getting outdoors much.
I hope your sister can make a recovery.

Boarding up our biz, city of Scottsdale barricading roads and fencing off areas. This is to prevent staging areas for protests planned for Friday and Sunday. Monday the curfew ends. The curfew is but one legal tool in our favor. From 8 to 5 when we can rest a little bit knowing that police can legally break up and arrest potential problems. Plus the peaceful protests, which of course I have no problem, must end by 8. After that the PD has some power. We'll see, maybe nothing, maybe.........

I feel like the PD may have been caught off guard last week (esp in Scottsdale) and suspect they have a more robust plan in place now. But other cities with larger police forces have been overrun, so there's no telling what might happen.
