Looks like AWD isn't acceptable for icy conditions now.

This was a hotly debated topic last year in one of my Facebook groups. It came down to the people running the PCSD checkpoints are the Sheriff Department Auxiliary Volunteers, who tend to be older retired men. The easiest way for them to check to see if a vehicle can make it up is to walk around the car and look for a 4X4 badge or logo on it. If it doesn't have one, they turn them around, despite the fact that most Subarus could handle the road better than a pick up truck with 4x4 could. No amount of explaining to them will change their mind.

@SpiderLegs
I guess I just need to buy a 4x4 badge and put it on my car and bike.

Easy enough to find several of them at a junkyard and then pick one that seems to match your vehicle style.

I was stopped and told to turn around at a check point many years ago. Driving my 78 CJ 7, I was informed that in order to proceed I needed 4-wheel drive. I informed the deputy that I was driving a Jeep and was informed I could not proceed because I did not have locking front hubs.

@Nighthiker
I remember those older CJ's with the QuadraTrac transfer case having a vacuum actuator that would lock the front hubs up to a speed of 10 mph if turned on. Aside from that they were essentially an AWD system.
