Camp on Flatiron?
Has anyone ever set up camp on top of or around the top of the flatiron? This seems like kind of a cool spot to set up camp, catch the sunset and sunrise?

Re: Camp on Flatiron?
I've camped on top 3 times. It's pretty cool. You've got incredible sunsets (only known benefit of Maricopa County smog), and the city lights to enjoy at night. I remember hearing dogs barking in A.J. while on top. The hard part is water. You either have to bring it all up, or go after a period of heavy rain. There are some small, sink sized water catches on the mesa that the Goldfield topo shows as "Flatiron", that fill up after a good rain. I doubt there is any water left up on top now. There are good places to camp on that mesa, too, away from the crowds on the actual Flatiron.

Re: Camp on Flatiron?
Well, the first time I hiked up Flatiron my buddy and I had to finish it at night. We were halfway there and the sun started to set, so we just followed the blue and white spray painted dots. Thankfully we had our headlamps with us. Once I got to the top I was wowed by the view. Ever since then I have wanted to go back and camp there. I didn't think it was legal. I thought that the rangers would come looking for me, but now that I know people have done it I will be camping there once the weather warms up.
