Colin Fletcher

Post by ck_1 »

Some of you may know Colin Fletcher, the hiker/author. He has written several books, including The Complete Walker, The Man Who Walked Thru Time, and River. He is credited with starting the backpacking movement in America.

You may not know that about a year ago he was walking across the street near his home and was hit by a woman driving a Toyota 4-Runner. Fletcher was severly injured and sustained some brain injury.

This months issue of Backpacker Magazine has a wonderful article about Fletcher and his recovery. Annette McGivney interviews him at his home. Fletcher is a fiercly private man, so this is something of a big deal for him to have agreed to the interview.

It is one of the best Backpacker articles I've read in a long time...

thought I'd pass it on...

They don't say exactly where he lives, only that it is in suburban Monterray (Calif) County.

I read the article also. Colin Fletcher is quite a complex individual. A must read for all hiking enthusiasts.

When I saw the thread title, I knew ck1 was behind it. A very good read indeed. It's a shame that a life such as his came to such an abrubt turn like that.

I was thinking the same way at first Todd, then I looked at it from the perspective that this guy is 80 and working hard to get back to where he was...how many 80 year olds can do that? The guy could probably kick all of us around. I'm impressed with "older people" (no, not you Hoolie) who haven't given up on doing things that are active...there is a woman named Helen Klein (sp)...she is in her late 70's and runs ultramarathons. She even took a shot at an Eco-Challenge...I mean, now that is inspirational.

Hoolie - damn son, you crack me up. We need to create a new emoticon for you: the shouting emoticon.

Maybe a special font just for you...something that looks like chicken scratch, in red, with lots of exclamation points.

A long time ago I read "The Man Who Walked Through Time." What a great adventurer Colin Fletcher is. Too bad about the sudden turn in fortune.

I concur with Olesma. Hoolie - you crack me up. Thanks for the giggle this a.m.

As for the article, I'm looking forward to reading it. I picked up those books but have only read the beginning of one so far. Isn't is amazing that the man can travel some of the most remote places in the world by foot only to have tragedy strike right outside his home. Life~let me tell ya all about it.

I just picked up the new Backpacker at Newark Airport Monday for my trip home, mainly because I saw the article about Colin Fletcher. I just love that guy. It really is a great article but so unfortunate about what happened to him. He is determined to get those 80-year-old legs (that look like a 20-year-old's) moving again and if anyone can do it, I bet he can! That issue of Backpacker is pretty good beside the Fletcher article, BYW.

If you haven't read The Man Who Walked Through Time, you must! It is one of my all-time favorite books, and I have read it multiple times. If you love the Canyon you have to read it! Also, The Thousand Mile Summer and some of his other books are great too.

This is alittle off the subject but kind of fits. A woman by the name of Rose Steward who was 84 just past away this month. For those of you who regularly hike South Mtn.as this was one of her favorite places to run, you may have seen/ known her. I remember when I first started running events I would see her at every one. It never mattered where she placed just that she ran. She was my inspiration and the inspiration of those that were fortunate enough to know her.
