Fly Fishing in Dead Horse State Park

So I'm starting to get into the wonderful sport of fly fishing after having gotten a rod this past Christmas. I've been practicing technique on the Lower Salt but have yet to catch anything (still having alot of fun learning to cast correctly consistently). Anywho I've been looking all around and it seems that the fly fishing on the Verde were it runs through Dead Horse State Park is a really good spot this time of year. I kinda want to see what the interest is in going out and doing some fly fishing. Perhaps even go some place where we can hike in and camp and do 2 days worth of fishing. Wanting to shoot for within a few weeks or so of now.

I learned something about fly casting at my dude ranch job last summer. Hope to learn more if they hire me back this summer. I learned the basic cast pretty quickly. (I think because I'm a pretty good yoyo player, I just thought of it as learning a new yoyo trick. I'm serious!) I think the rest of the knowledge is a really big learning curve, but with just a little more info I'd be able to go over to our local foreclosed golf course on the Little Colorado River and practice on real fish. I hear there are a lot of fish in there! I have a cheapo Eagle Claw pole, but no line, so I need to get it all rigged, etc. Not sure how the cheap pole will work for me after learning on an Orvis!

I never thought if it like a very oddly built yo yo but this is an interesting analogy. I remember in middle school having a Yomega X-Brain yo yo was a big deal. I used to be pretty decent at it too. It was funny though they got so popular they got banned from school, the school board was afraid they would be used as weapons ^_^

Yes so far the rest has been a big learning curve, especially with dry fly fishing.....I guess my deaddrift still isn't good enough because I can never get them interested. I have managed to get at least a few bites using nymphs though. BTW on the whole pole deal I actually got a full combo package for only I think 120 bucks. It's actually a pretty decent 5 wt medium action rod. Ended up getting some polyleader (basically same stuff as your flyline but clear and tapered more like a leader) and it drastically improved my casting.
