My new hiking partners!!!
Just born this weekend, my 2 new hiking partners. (load carriers)
Male, Nubian goats, purchased from black mesa ranch, the one highlighted in last months az highways.. if not interested in goats, check them out for their artisan goat cheeses and chocolates!!
Any thoughts on names? I still havent met them, so that always plays into it..

Looks like I'm a bit late... I was thinking of BB for one and Q for the other... NEVER ask me for serious advice, however...

where to start..

oceanswithin-i dunno about rent, but figuring they can lug about 50 lbs each, im sure ppl will start joining my trips..
wendy- you are a nerd, thats awesome tho.. i do like muhly for sure, im sure they would like to munch on some muhly also..
now i have too many name options, beavis and butthead would be awesome, so would cabra and chupa.. along with wendys pics, i got a tough decision on my hands..

I believe these are the fancy terms for goatmeat. I wasn't advocating or suggesting anything by the names, but that was the inspiration. I just like the irony. Of course what do I know I have a puppy named Muesli.

I am leaning toward Beavis and Butthead cause it makes me laugh or Muhly and Andy cause it is creative.
Too bad you don't have female goats. The milk would be nice and the fellow HAZers might see the value in keeping them alive ;)

Re: My new hiking partners!!!
How about Thor and Loki? Did you buy doggie backpacks or have you found specialized goatpacks?
I second the sentiment that it's too bad they're not nanny goats because goat cheese rocks the house. Maybe it's a good thing for you because if they were nannies then you would be asked to bring water crackers and goat cheese spiced with either dill or roasted red peppers on every hike. Maybe you should do that anyways? I have heard that goat cheese spiked with oreganocatnip is bad, BTW.

So, Berk - where exactly are you going to keep the little over-named munchers? Do you have a big piece of property?

In response to JamesLyding:
Ya, there are special goatpacks i have to purchase once they are full grown, which is about 200-225 lbs.. meaning they can carry about 50 lbs each... i considered the females but they are moody, and not as willing to do work.. this breed of goat isnt known for its packing abilities as much as it is for its milk and cheeses, so these boys will be castrated young to keep em energetic and well, young i guess.. there is also a good amount of training that will go into them before they will be fully trail ready..
In response to writelots:
Originally i was going to board them somewhere but i couldnt find the exact specs i was looking for in that.. i basically was just trying to find someone who would let them hang out with their goats or livestock and provide a place to sleep for them. i was willing to bring them all their food and clean up after them but with even that considered most people wanted like $200 a month to board them.. thats way too much, and i also want access to them whenever i want to take them hiking and train them.. sooooo i talked to a buddy of mine who has some property out near new river, called the county to make sure we were within code and what not, and am currently building them a pen and house.. This will allow me access to them at any time, and my friend and his son can help with caring for them..
im keeping them up in snowflake with their herd until they are about 8 weeks old and weened off of moms milk.. mid may ill head up and drag em back to the desert.. o and i do plan on buying a baby pig and rasing it for slaughter, ill announce the Official HAZ BBQ once shes ready..

The pig is cool and all but back to the goats... if you could please work these into their daily diet, 1 small peeled white onion, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, 2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce (ie: Tabasco™), 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon paprika and of course 1 teaspoon white sugar to keep 'em sweet.
