"How about Trail Phones every mile?"
From today's Republican opinion page....
"Your editorial "Be Prepared for mountain hiking-Superstitions peril" in the... AZ Republic of Aug.29 is very interesting. The helpful suggestions to hikers regarding the preparation and precaution are timely. Since hiking these mountains seems to be getting popular, wouldn't it be a good idea to mark the trails with directions and mileposts from originations. I feel it would also be a good idea to have solar powered public telephones at mile intervals so that people can enjoy the hiking with out any worry, knowing that help is only a mile away."....I've witheld the author's name on this one....
It really scares me that people think this way.

what ever happened to personal accountability. If you want to go hiking in the supes, make sure you know where you are going! It's not someone else's job to make sure everyone will be ok. If you can't swim, don't jump in the lake!
The trails in the supes, for the most part, are pretty well marked. If you have a map and compass, it's very easy to find your way around.
Also, cell phones don't work in most places in the supes. These so called solar phones would have to be hard wired.

Virtual hiking
OK, sure--a real growth industry. You get somebody on a treadmill with a "rough" belt that simulates a trail treadway and then a real-time video screen in front of the treadmill. Your "virtual hiking buddy" is actually out on the trail carrying a backpack satellite dish while wearing a "head cam." This is a small web cam that looks a lot like a headlamp only it send a video signal to the person at home on the treadmill. They don't see their "virtual hiking buddy," they only see what is out in front of him/her. Meanwhile, sensors on the "hiking buddy's" biomechanical apparatus send the appropriate signals to the treadmill and it adjusts it angle of incline, etc. to simulate real world terrain. Small air jets blow dust into the home bound hiker and occasionally a sprinkler sstem cuts loose with a "monsoon" from the ceiling. Radiant heaters in the walls crank up at intervals and subwoofers put out realistic simulated lifelike rattlesnake noises. All this for only $100 a hour! Think of the money we could all make as "virtual hiking buddies," a real growth industry!Cakewalk wrote:Maybe we can just hire other people to go hiking for us, that way we can stay safe and cool at home.
